District Wide Information for the Week of 9/28

Board-approved Instructional Models

On September 24, the South Bay Union Elementary School District board of trustees approved the option of a hybrid instruction model (with a blend of on-site and distance learning) or full distance learning. With this new information, your decision may have changed. As a result, we are once again asking for your decision regarding your choice of instructional model for your student. Please complete this form if you haven't already done so. We will be calling the families that haven't completed it on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In order to create the best plans and answer any questions parents may have, we are also asking for your input. If you have any unanswered questions regarding health/safety, instructional models, transportation, meals, or anything else, please add them to this form.

Thanks for your help. We are committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities to your students given the current circumstances.

Flu Vaccination Clinic

Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is offering a flu shot clinic at Pine Hill School on October 9 from 3:00-6:00. This service is for everyone in your family. Flyers with more information will be in next week's newsletter.

Return School Forms

Thanks to everyone who has completed and sent back the school forms from the first week of school. If you haven't done so, please return the following school forms to the office ASAP. Use the self-addressed stamped envelope or feel free to drop off at either school's office.

Required forms:

  • Acknowledgment of Handbook (blue @ SB, white @ PH)
  • Emergency Contact updates (white)
  • Turnaround Arts Form (teal)
  • Last page of Parent Annual Rights (white booklet)
  • Housing Survey (purple)
  • Meal Application (pink)
  • Device Contract (if not signed during device pickup)

Site Council Openings

There are openings on all three Site Councils. Pine Hill will meet on the second Monday of each month, South Bay meets monthly on 3rd Tuesday of the month, and South Bay Charter meets monthly on 3rd Thursday of the month. The commitment is about an hour a month.

Help each school develop plans to improve the educational experience for all of our students. Contact either Tim Grimmett (Pine Hill) or Heather Becksted (South Bay) for more information.

Office Hours

During distance learning, the offices at both Pine Hill and South Bay will be open from 8 am to 1 pm for walk-in needs. After 1 pm the phone will still be answered, but the office will be closed. If you need to schedule an appt. after 1 pm please contact the office. Thank you.

Self-Screening Required

Prior to entering either the Pine Hill or South Bay campus, all staff and community members must self-screen for COVID-19 symptoms. Use this list from the CDC to check to see if you have any symptoms. If you are symptomatic at all, please stay home and contact your health care service provider.

We would also like to thank everyone for wearing a mask on campus. Wearing a mask is a requirement on our two campuses indoors and when maintaining a minimum of six-feet of physical distancing is not possible. Thank you for being a part of the solution! Please see this page for more information about face coverings and how they help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Food Distribution for 20-21

During distance learning, Pine Hill/South Bay will be providing food twice a week for families. Pick up will be at South Bay School from 11:00-1:00 Tuesday and Friday. At this time we are offering free breakfast and lunch to all children in your home 18 and under. We hope you come by for meal distribution!

From the Family Resource Center:

We have plenty of diapers for families that are in need! We are also currently signing families up for our weekend food bag program through Food For People. This program will start on October 9. Please call to check for availability at 707-445-5933. We look forward to working with you!

Library News!

Library book curbside pickup will continue this week!

You or your student may now reserve books online using their Chromebook! There is a short video with easy instructions on how to do this posted below. South Bay Library book curbside pickups will be on Tuesdays from 11:00-1:00 & Pine Hill pickups will be on Friday from 11:30-1:30. I will be outside near the curb with a cart of the reserved library books.

I can also email you written instructions if that is more helpful to you. Just send me an email at abronkall@southbayusd.org and I will send them to you. We are so excited that students can now check out library books again and read what they choose! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Box Tops for PH & SB

Hello,

My name is Allison Bronkall, the Librarian at both Pine Hill and South Bay Libraries this school year. Besides working in the libraries, I'm also the parent of two school-age daughters so I understand that every family has so much going on right now! However, if your family would like to help out the schools with the Box Tops for Education Program, I am still running the programs.

In the last school year, the program transitioned to an electronic one where grocery receipts need to be scanned for Box Tops credits with a free app you can download for your smartphone on the Apple Store or Google Play. The program is also still accepting any paper Box Tops clips so if you have any of those, please drop them off at either of the school offices or mail them in to the schools, attention: Library. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents so every little bit counts. Thank you for your time and support of this program that earns money for new library books!
