Mindful Moments: a Wellness Initiative
This fall, our school is excited to introduce a school-wide wellness initiative that promotes resiliency, mindfulness and positive mental health. Under the leadership of our new Wellness Committee, staff and student leaders will work together to plan and deliver wellness activities.
Every month, we will focus on a particular theme related to mental health. Our first theme, "Living Life in Autopilot", will be featured in September.
Every week, all students will practice a mindful activity that will help them focus on the moment and work confidently toward their goals. This 15-minute activity will relate to the monthly theme and will take place each Wednesday during Period 2.
Why Wellness?
According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, "Mental health affects the way people think, feel and act. Taking care of our mental health is just as important as having a healthy body" (Caring for Kids, http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/handouts/mental_health).
It is important that students learn how to navigate, manage and cope with the changing face of stress in today’s world. Teaching students to build resilience and promoting healthy coping strategies will positively impact student well-being and academic achievement.
Wellness Committee
Wellness matters to everyone, and that is why this exciting initiative is a collaborative effort. The Wellness Committee is looking for student leaders to work with teachers to organize and deliver the school’s wellness breaks and activities.
Responsibilities:
Attend monthly meetings to plan weekly wellness breaks and bi-weekly activities
Assist teachers to lead and deliver activities
Promote wellness initiative in the school and community
Students will be selected based on applications and teacher references. Application packages are available in Student Services.
Wellness Wednesdays
Beginning in September, the Wellness Committee will be featuring bi-weekly Wellness Wednesday lunchtime activities. All students are encouraged to participate in upcoming yoga, meditation and zumba sessions. We value your ideas and input. Please forward all activity suggestions to the Wellness Committee.
