On Friday, Feb. 19th, the boys basketball team traveled to Spring to take on the Broncos on their Winter Royalty night. A good start had the Cardinals up double figures at half, but the Broncos made a run the second half. The Cardinals were able to keep the lead and won with a final score of 58-55. Ty Abts(12th) led the scoring with 16, followed by Justin Fawcett with 14 points, and Jaden Hamm(10th) with 12. Hamm also grabbed 8 boards and Landon Watkins(11th) took 2 big charges.
On Saturday morning, the Cardinals traveled to Louisburg to take on the #3 state ranked Wildcats. The Cardinals played well in spurts and had the lead in the third quarter, but turned the ball over too many times to be able to beat a really good team. The Cardinals competed well, but came up short 43-53. Hamm led the way with a double double of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Watkins hit three 3's and had 10 points as well as 10 points from Abts. Watkins and Hamm both had 4 assists as well.
JV Boys Basketball - Coach Watkins
On Tuesday, February 9th Ottawa traveled to Eudora to play our 2nd set of games with them this year. We came out strong and didn’t let up till the end. We pressed a majority of the game to get our guys used to pressing a lot. In three of the four quarters, we held them under 4 pts for that quarter which is some great defense. Love the way we are progressing as the season goes and the fact that we are competing all 32 minutes is imperative for us to be successful. We were led by Logan Sullivan (9th) 18 pts, Cole Parker 10 pts, and Jaden Bender grabbed 8 boards. Always a great day to beat Ottawa!!! Great job boys
On Friday, February 19th we traveled to Spring Hill to face them for the first time this year. We came out hot and stayed hot throughout the contest to run away with it early. Applied a lot of pressure and made them do things they didn't want to do. Great effort by the boys. We won 66-29. We were led by hot shooting from beyond the 3 pt line by Cole Parker (10th) w 18 pts all on 3 pointers. Followed by Maddox Votaw (10th) w 11 pts, 5 steals, 5 Assists.
Early morning travel to Louisburg on Saturday the 20th for our 2nd matchup with them. As usual, early morning meant a slow start as we were limping along through the 1st half. Just had a hard time hitting shots with dead legs from the night before but found a way through our defense to get what we needed done. In the 2nd half, we held them to 9 pts total and were starting to hit shots as Brayden Beerbower (11th) and Cody Loganbill (11th) added 11 and 10 points respectively. We had 17 steals as a team which led us to the win 48-27.
9th grade Boys Basketball- Coach Steffen
On Tuesday, February 9th the 9th grade Cardinals played a home game against Ottawa. The Cardinals played with a limited roster due to some injuries and had some players step up and play great. Preston Bruce and Jerry Coble had great games and helped the Cardinals to a victory against a really competitive Ottawa team. The Cardinals won with a final score of 41 to 29. The Cardinals were led in scoring by Adrion Seals with 22 points, Zach Arnold with 9 points, and Kelton Ford with 8 points. Adrion Seals filled the stat sheet up with a triple double, 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 steals. Our record improved to 7-5 with the win.
On Friday, February 19th, the 9th grade Cardinals traveled to Spring Hill for a Frontier League game. The Cardinals battled the entire night, but lost 55 to 54. The Cardinals had a chance at the end, but missed a last second shot. The Cardinals were led in scoring by Braylen Hoobler with 19, Adrion Seals with 14, and Kelton Ford with 11. This brings the Cardinals record to 7-6. They will have two more games this week, Tuesday @ Baldwin and Thursday vs. Piper in Eudora.
Varsity Wrestling - Coach Andrews
"Why is there pain right there"? Then quickly remembering the 3 or 5 fights I just got into Saturday reminds me of why I hurt. As I sit here not really "wanting" to get up I'm reminded of the coach saying "I want you guys to go for a run this weekend. Make it long, make it hurt. Find something out about yourself.". What's he mean? How far is long? This man is ridiculous. Wonder if mom got my groceries for the week? Is it bad that I'm wondering why I have to eat SO much food when I'm trying to lose weight and not to mention all of the water?! Doesn't he know how hard it is to drink over a gallon of water every day and a gallon and a half on Thursday?! Wrestling stinks... How long is long? Why does everything we do have to hurt? Why is everything so hard? This is stupid. I'm not going all out today, I've worked hard enough already this week. Have I actually worked hard enough? What if the coach or my partner sees me slacking? What if I lose because I'm not in as good of shape as my opponents. What if I lose this weekend? I have to wrestle Dake, Dake beat Caldwell, I lost to Caldwell, great, I'm going to lose. Why is this so hard? Why is the coach always telling us that "It has to hurt"? Coach thinks we can beat everybody. Why is the coach always talking about physics and math and angles and blah blah blah.... I thought this was supposed to be fun. All of this makes zero sense to me. What is wrong with me?! Snap back to reality and quit feeling sorry for yourself. Hey man, your blast doubles were straight fire on Saturday. We tore up everybody. Bruh, we had so much fun. Those dudes were straight cappin all day and we just shut 'em down. Should have been on YouTube, be global right now. Your glad we hit that 18 mile run? Yeah, it wasn't bad, I feel better now for doing it. Spin drills today, huh? I say we have the coach step it up and mix in some 360's. Let's really see if we have what it takes. Time to warm up.
These are just a "few" thoughts that run through the mind of a wrestler every day, day in and day out during the season. For some, these thoughts dictate everything action they do. Now, throw in the fact that some of these kids are remote learners, it is winter and cloudy outside most days. Winter itself can keep you in a dark place if you let it. You just have to work hard to see and feel the sunshine behind the clouds. You just have to keep your mind right to take yourself to that warm and sunny place and it isn't easy.
I'm in the business of making “wrestlers”. Wrestlers are a little rough around the edges, not so nice, a little mean, and always hard-nosed... but only in the room and on the mat. Wrestlers that make the choice to push themselves and inspire those around them will be successful in anything they choose to do in life. Life does not punch as hard as a wrestling room. Watching a teenager’s face as they truly begin to understand and buy into what you are saying is priceless. These past few weeks there have been A LOT of tears shed. Some of these wrestlers will never put on another singlet or uniform, some will never know the feeling of having a State medal, some will never know the feeling of being a State qualifier and some will always have regrets about the dreaded "What if's". I watched some of the toughest kids I've ever had the pleasure of knowing sit in dark hallways with their heads buried in their hands and just sob. As a coach, I just hold them until they quit crying. Doesn't matter how long it takes because to them, they feel like their entire existence has led them to this moment where they feel like they just failed. 10 years of training and dedication just ended in what "feels" like a failure. There are no words that can even begin to ease their pain. I have no problem crying right alongside them for as long as it takes. A friend of mine said after these moments you just have to "put it in your gut and deal with it". As a coach, we still have to get our minds back to the fight because we still have other kids continuing on. It's hard feeling what they feel and to know that you have to "bury" it because you still have other wrestlers. I know what heartache feels like, I know what the "what if" feels like, I know what it feels like to have your heart ripped from your chest (metaphorically speaking), I know what it's like to know your season/career is over and I won't even get into the "regrets". For some, their wrestling journey has come to an end. However, they are still kids and the lessons that wrestling has taught them is just... immeasurable. These lessons will help carry them through the rest of their life whether they feel like it now or not. This season I watched wrestlers turn into a family... of brothers and sisters. I watched them start to change their mindset on the importance of life, family, friends, school, and the sport. Truly starting to "buy-in". There isn’t one kid in that room who won’t be able to handle what life throws at him/her. At some point, life will try to beat them to their knees but it had better watch out because this group will come back up swinging. Wrestling is just different. It's not better than other sports, it's not worse, it's just different... I tell my wrestlers that I will pick them up when they fall, and I do. I probably hug them and tell them I love them more than I should. My guys and girls both come up and hug me after big wins and almost all losses. If you put those two minutes of "thoughts" I spoke of earlier into your head, you will begin to get an idea of what we put these kids through and what "they" put themselves through. Wrestling isn’t easy, mentally or physically but, it is more rewarding than anything they will ever know. I am truly blessed to be in the position I am in. I love my wrestlers and will stand by them through anything life throws at them. Whether they are still wrestling or even after. They will rise to any challenge and they will know “no quit”. So I guess this is how I wanted to sum up all of their season wins and what some would say are losses. To me, every single one of my kids had an undefeated season. So, for those who just want to know what their records are. Here ya go, we were 645-0 as a team. I may be a little biased and gruff at times but hey, I'm a wrestling coach...
Oh, one last thing... This Saturday, you have 3 fellas competing in one extra tournament for the season. Everything that these guys have been training for their entire wrestling career has led to this exact moment. Win or lose, it won't dictate or define who they are. The accomplishments of just getting here are worthy beyond measure. Congrats on a most wonderful season fellas and have some fun. See you mat side. Proud to be called "Coach" by you all and "Dad" by a couple...

Sign up for Debate and/or Forensics - Coach Raugewitz-Blick
Incoming 9th-12th graders are encouraged to consider signing up for Debate and/or Forensics for the 2021-22 school year. Both are competitive, co-curricular activities that give students opportunities to research, learn, collaborate, speak, listen, write, and generally become stronger communicators and performers. There is no pre-requisite, and there is no "right kind of kid" for these courses - anyone who wants to try will be able to learn and grow in their own way. It is also a great way to be part of a team.
Debate occurs in the fall semester only. This is a partnered competitive event. The class focuses on learning the format of policy debate and building skills in the areas of speaking, research, and communication about policies that should or could be passed in the real world.
Forensics occurs only in the Spring semester. It is (generally) an individual competitive situation, with different events students can choose from (Track is probably the best sports comparison). This activity focuses on acting and/or speaking, and is a great way for kids to work on communication, performance, advocacy, physical components of acting and speaking, expression, etc.
In both Debate & Forensics, there is an outside-of-class time commitment for competitions, generally involving 2-3 Saturdays (of the student's choosing) throughout the semester. These dates are available early on and the schedule is very flexible, so it is not difficult to participate in Debate or Forensics while doing other sports, band, etc.

This program helps fill needs unmet by any other source. If you or you know of someone that has a need, please reach out to your student's school.
ESF administers financial assistance for emergency needs such as food, clothing, medical, transportation, utility, and housing. Of course, some requests are unique and fall into no specific category. Please note, this is an emergency fund and money is limited.
