Greetings from the Principal:
Dear Falcon Families,
During the month of February, students will be learning about Covey’s Habit 5, Seek first to understand, then to be understood. In kid-friendly language, this is “Listen before you talk.” As we help students develop leadership characteristics, we want them to understand that while it’s important to be confident in your own ideas and thoughts, it’s just as important to value to what others have to say. While the habit of first listening to understand seems so simple at first glance, we're really talking about complex tasks of developing effective communication skills and managing conflict.
It’s human nature to want to be understood. When listening to someone else speak, we all have a tendency to evaluate what’s being said and form an opinion. We filter what we hear through our own life experiences and paradigms. If you have ever disagreed with someone’s decision or opinion, you know that it can be challenging to invite more information to better understand that decision or opinion. The path of least resistance is to find a way to get your point across, but this rarely leads to a win-win result.
Habit 5 requires patience and practice, but by seeking first to understand, it can lead to a more productive outcome and strengthen a relationship.
Focusing on Habit 5 during spring Parent-Teacher Conferences is a productive way to capitalize on all of the shared knowledge of your child between what you experience at home and what a teacher and student experience during a school day. By better understanding a student's learning style, motivation, and academic and personal goals, it can help create a collaborative plan for success for the remainder of the school year.
Seek to Understand in February and Beyond!

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Our staff is looking forward to sharing all that we've learned, created, and the goals we've reached at Parent-Teacher Conferences next week. Conferences are held the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 13 and all day Thursday, Feb. 14.
Many grade levels conduct student-led conferences to empower our students to be leaders and take ownership of their academic journey! (Your teacher will be sure to let you know if your child needs to attend the conference if it is student-led.) There are many benefits to student-led conferences.
- It gives the parent and teacher a chance to hear the student reflect on his or her progress in his or her own words.
- It reassures students that parents and the teacher are there to support them.
- It holds students accountable for their academic and behavioral choices.
- It gives the parent the opportunity to see the teacher and child interact.
Thank you for taking the time to arrange a conference time with your child’s teacher(s). This time is set aside to provide an opportunity to share current progress on your child and to collaborate on how to best support each of our students. If your family is unable to attend during the provided days, please know that it can be difficult to reschedule conferences outside of the allotted times. Thanks for making every effort possible to attend conferences during the provided times.
