Cedar Reader
Cedar Park Middle School - February 10, 2017
A note from the Principal...
As a principal, I have opportunities every day to question students about the motives of their choices, and more often than not, I am met with a blank stare. Dead air. No response.
How can this be? I can justify my every choice, my every action, and I can even attempt to excuse any verbal stumble with logic and reasoning. How can a "young brain" be so blank and unresponsive when faced with a simple question or decision?
I offer you the following article that may be able to give you a small glimpse into the teen brain and its "reasoning" so that all parents/grandparents/ etc. can learn. I hope you enjoy it.
Exclusion Day is February 15th
If you have received a letter and/or phone call from Cedar Park and your student has not had their vaccination, they will be excluded from school (Unexcused) on February 15th until they have received their vaccine per Oregon State law.

Spotlight on AVID Tutor Jennifer Kempf-Burkart
• How long have you been an AVID tutor? - 2 yrs
• What inspired you to become an AVID tutor? - I wanted to get involved so that I could understand what AVID was really all about.
• What do you like the most about tutoring AVID students? - As a former middle school teacher, I honestly just love this age of student. Now that I work at district office, I truly miss working with students on a regular basis and building those relationships. AVID gives me that opportunity.
• What would you tell someone who's thinking about becoming an AVID tutor? - Just give it a go! The kids will lead the way so you don't have to do everything perfectly. You simply need to build relationships, encourage their efforts and enjoy the personalities.
What is AVID?
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a District wide system at the Middle and High School level that aims to prepare all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. AVID impacts students throughout the school because teachers use AVID strategies to influence the academic and behavioral skills of their students in all content classes. While there is an AVID elective course for selected students, ALL students benefit because the methodologies, strategies, and expectations are schoolwide, impacting the learning environment and culture of the entire campus.

9th Grade Forecasting is Underway
On February 9th, all the 8th grade students received high school forecasting information. If they will attend Beaverton HS or Sunset HS, they also received a forecasting form. Students are expected to complete the form based on the attendance boundary we have on file, unless they were grandfathered in at Sunset or other arrangements were made with that high school.
Please review these materials with your 8th grader and sign the form. It is due by February 24th. Students who have not turned a form in by that time will complete it during their lunch period, with supervision.
In addition, there are curriculum nights on Feb. 22nd at Beaverton and Sunset high schools. We encourage you to attend - there will be an opportunity to get questions answered about the programs and curriculum at each high school.
Rena Jan is our 8th grade counselor; please call her if you have questions. Any changes to your address should be submitted to the main office; we will make sure students receive a new forecasting form if it is in a different HS boundary area. For students going to Westview, Aloha, Options program, or Mountainside High Schools, we will give your child forecasting materials as we receive them from the high school. Feel free to contact the high school if you would like it sooner.
