Teachers, who navigate the day from the helm of their classrooms, watch a sea of students for four minutes between each passing, often swimming against the current to get to the next eddy of a classroom.

As graduates of the K -12 experience, we all have our memories. They’re funny, they’re nostalgic, they’re sometimes better left forgotten, but the one thing we can’t truly remember is the physical and mental stamina required to get through a day – we lose that memory very quickly!

So, in order to remember, to empathize, and to consider the experience of the students in our care, we are going to step into their shoes.

From November 19-22, fourteen CMHS teachers and two students from each grade level will be participating in the National "Shadow a Student" Challenge. Ms. Griffin, Mr. McLean, Mrs. Bardetti, Mr. Kerwin, Mrs. Calvo, Mrs. MacIntosh, Mrs. Cornock, Mrs. Madeiros, Mrs. Kusins, Mr. Witkowski, Ms. Haen, Ms. Whipple, Mrs. Markram, and Mr. Tresca will each shadow a student for one day. They'll each meet a student in their homeroom, attend all of their classes, complete all of their assigned work, and participate in their after school commitments.

Our goal is to reflect on the daily demands of our students and gain insight to help us build a more supportive learning community for all. We look forward to sharing our findings with you in the coming weeks!

The students were recognized for entering their project in the national Lexus Eco Challenge contest. Pictures below show the students work at various stages of the project. They hope that the rain garden will collect and filter runoff from the roof and that future students will enjoy continuing the project.

alumni spotlight

The Counseling Corner would like to highlight a CMHS Alumni this week: Makenzi Bellando

Makenzi graduated in 2016 from Carver High School and went on to play collegiate soccer at Castleton University in Vermont. Below is a photo of Kenzi and Mr. Schultz when she signed her contract with Castleton.

Big picture
Makenzi joined the Castelon team in the fall of 2016 and was immediately an asset to her team and a known player in the league. As a freshman, she was named ECAC Rookie of the Week twice, and also NAC Rookie of the Week twice. In 2017, as a sophomore, Kenzi tallied career highs in goals (10), assists (6), finished second on the team in points (26), and was named to the NAC All-Tournament Team. As a junior, she started in all 19 games, scored a team-leading 10 goals, recorded 4 game-winning goals, was named LEC Player of the Week Honors, and LEC All-Conference First Team.
Big picture
Big picture
As a Castleton senior, Makenzi played an outstanding season. She earned her second Little East Conference all-conference award, she finished with seven goals and six assists for 20 points on the year, amassing the 20-point plateau in her third straight season, and also finished fourth in the conference in shots with 79. She shared the team-lead with eight points in eight conference games and recorded three game-winning goals, including the winner versus Keene State on Sep. 14 to kick off conference play. She also scored a goal and had an assist in a pair of playoff contests, scoring in her final Collegiate game against Western Connecticut.
Big picture

Makenzi was a team captain for 2 seasons and ended her career ranked fourth in the Castleton all-time list with 85 points and in a tie for fourth with 35 goals. She majored in Sports Management, held an internship with the Athletic Director at Mill River Union High School, coached the Fusion club level youth Soccer, and has been offered to assist the Coach at the Collegiate level in Fall 2020. Makenzi has had an unbelievable collegiate experience and what better way to end it than landing on the cover of the recent issue of the NCAA magazine. As Castleton University celebrates its history in allowing women to compete in sports, Kenzi stands on the cover alongside one of the team’s first athletes. It was a proud moment for Kenzi to be a part of the school’s history.
