Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
Next week we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week at Meadow Park and across the nation. Although we have some fun ideas in the works to recognize our wonderful staff, often times it is a thank you from a student or parent that matters most. If you have had a great experience with a teacher or group of teachers, now is the time to let them know about it! I hope you will take the time to recognize someone who has had a positive impact on your child while we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.
Make it a great week!

Meadow Park Jazz Ambassadors perform at the Schnitz!
The Meadow Park Jazz Ambassadors performed in the mezzanine of the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Auditorium before the Oregon Symphony's performance on Saturday, April 27th. Our students exuded 'Excellence' throughout their performance and showed a high level of ambassadorship as they represented Meadow Park Middle School and tThe Beaverton School District. Many observers were surprised to learn that they were middle school students.
This was not a festival or an event to be ranked or win trophies and ribbons, but an opportunity to perform and share approximately 40 minutes worth of incredible learning and hard work, on behalf of our performers, with others.
The Oregon Symphony's liaison wrote to us, "I’m at the Hall right now and had a number of staff, Musicians AND conductor Jeff Tyzik ask me to pass on their compliments on your fine playing last night. Our front of house manager, John Kroninger, was especially impressed. He is a tuba player and he said the brass were particularly skilled, he said they are playing at HS level and that you obviously are challenging them. He said the trumpets hit every note just right! Everyone says “ask them back every year”.....Congrats!"
We are so proud of our Meadow Park performers. The compliments they received from the Portland Symphony's conductor and musicians regarding their musicianship skills, as well as the invitation to return next year, is something to feel good about! This is huge and our kids earned this praise!
3rd Annual Poetry Slam at Meadow Park!
This morning we held our 3rd Annual Poetry Slam in the library as a culminating activity for a month-long poetry unit through Advisory. Throughout April, students had the opportunity to learn about and write their own poetry using structures like “Timed Free Write", “The Most Important Thing About Me”, and “Stereotypes and Assumptions." Students were able to express their voice through poetry both individually as well as collaboratively with peers.
As a way to celebrate, more than 20 students shared their poems to an audience. Our poets shared their own original work or a poem by different artists that held special meaning to them. These young artist blew us all away with their unique voice - they had the audience totally engaged both laughing and crying throughout.
It was a successful end to Poetry Month and each year it gets better and better with more students taking risks and putting themselves out there. We can’t wait until next year’s Slam!
A big thank you to Nancy Elsmore, Meadow Park's Library Media Assistant, for organizing this fantastic event.
The entry at Meadow Park looks beautiful!
This is the second annual BSD Innovation Expo held on May 16 from 5-8 PM at Aloha HS. This is all BSD community event showcasing nearly 60 exhibits from K-12 classrooms all over the school district highlighting the innovative teaching and learning practices in our schools. This event is made possible through sponsoring organizations in the area via the Beaverton Educational Foundation (BEF).
Safe Routes to School - Please participate in our survey!
Dear Meadow Park Parents and Guardians,
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient and fun if you are in the walk area.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be combined with classroom travel tallies to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses for three weeks starting May 1.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
Thank you,
Lynne Mutrie & Jen Anderson

Gracias,

Student Survey
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Student surveys of middle and high schools included three optional questions for students to identify their gender, ethnicity / race, and sexual orientation. These questions allow for additional levels of analysis of questions on inclusion, safety and bullying.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/district/research-reports.
