Alabama Released Time Now Law
School Ministries of Birmingham (SMB) provides “Released Time” classes where students attend off-campus Bible classes during the regular school day. In these classes, children who may not regularly attend church learn that Jesus Christ is the answer. On May 22, Gov. Kay Ivey signed HB 291 into law, clarifying the constitutional blueprint for schools across Alabama to offer Released Time Bible classes. Alabama is one of only a handful of states that has this law. Ohio, for instance, reported that “things began to take off once the bill passed.” We anticipate the same in Alabama.
It is evident that God went before and with us through this process. We thank Him and praise Him for this victory. Many people across the state were a part of this success - your prayers, your relationships, your trips to the State House, your contacts to legislators.
We are grateful to our bill sponsor Rep. Danny Garrett of Trussville for his strength and wisdom in carrying the bill all the way through. We were impressed by the legislative support and the many legislators who were vocal and active in their support.
