Big picture

Our 5 school values are I.R.O.C.K.

These are for our Vogeltown learners to be:

Inclusive (Whakaru), Respectful (Whakaute), Original (Tipu), Courageous (Kaha) and Kind (Atawhai).

These values were chosen by the staff, learners and community of Vogeltown School in 2019.

This term we are focusing on being 'Respectful'.

To be respectful we want our learners to greet people in a friendly manner, listen to others when they speak, share and take turns, work with others in work and play, keep our hands and feet to ourselves and say kind and encouraging things!

To help ensure that everyone enjoys the end of the year, 2020!

So we can all enjoy the end of 2020 in a fun, exciting and celebratory way

For the Year 6 students to enjoy their last days at VS in a positive and fun way

Realising how your actions can have a positive (or negative) impact on others

So we can all end the year in a happy and positive way! (The VS way!)

Not blaming others for your mistakes – learn from them

Being honest and responsible

Being accountable for your own actions

We all end the year happy, positive and ready for a holiday to refresh!

Kia ora koutou to our Vogeltown whanau, welcome to the end of Week 9, Term 4 - the penultimate week of the term and the year. This will be the 'last full' newsletter for 2020. We will have a very short Xmas newsletter out on Wednesday next week.

It has been a tough week, I am not going to lie! The weather has made it tough for our learners and our staff. Our learners have adapted well and the behaviour over the last 4 wet days has been pretty good. Yesterday and today's weather is more what we are after in the summer months. Yesterday we had our 'water day' for all syndicates - this went really well! Today we had our inaugural Whanau Fun Run - which involves obstacles and throwing coloured powder at our kids! What fun!

As mentioned below, on Monday all of our learners will bring home their 'Achievement Report' for 2020. On this report will also be the class they are going in to for 2021. Our learners will get to visit their new room and meet their teacher on Monday. Every learner will bring home a little 'teacher profile' as an introduction to your child's teacher for 2021.

The staffing for 2021 has been completed and is similar to 2020:

Rm 1 Adrienne Treadway (and Mrs Newland in Term 1) New Entrants

Rm 2 Heather Oliver Yr1/2

Rm 3 Jo Harold Yr 2

Rm 4 Emma King Yr 2

Rm 5 Lee Lash and Katie Stone Yr 2

Rm 6 This room will open in Term 2 with Mrs Newland, Team Leader of Taranaki team

Rm 8 Caroline Irving Yr 3/4

Rm 10 Dani Melody Yr 3/4

Rm 13 Laura Seed Yr 3/4, Team Leader of Huatoki team

Rm 15 Joshua Stirling

Rm 7 Elly Fleming Yr 4/5

Rm 9 Brent Bishop Yr 5/6

Rm 11 Nathan Ransfield Yr 5/6, Team Leader of Paetoki team

Rm 12 Rachel Pretty Yr 5/6

Rm 14 Jillian Bleasdale Yr 5/6

As you may notice, after many years, Mrs Sleep does not have her own class at Vogeltown School. Mrs Sleep has decided to take a bit of time for herself and only do a few days in 2021. Mrs Sleep is now our CRT teacher (Classroom Release Teacher) for 2021. She will be teaching in many rooms over 2021 - we can't wait to see what wonderful creations Mrs Sleep will make on these days!

Dates to look out for the last week of the year:

Monday 14th December - Achievement reports come home

Monday 14th December - Yr 6 Leavers lunch at school 12:00pm

Tuesday 15th December - Yr 6 Leavers Assembly, 5:30pm

Wednesday 16th December - Last day of 2020. School finishes at 3:00pm.

Have a great weekend with your families, whanau. Be kind, be safe, be aware.

Aroha nui, Mr O

The end is nigh! However, this Sunday 13th December, Huatoki Street will be closed all day.

Next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the road will be closed between 6pm and 6am.

For the Year 6 leavers assembly on Tuesday night, we are in negotiations with the council for them to start late so we can still park on Huatoki Street.

A new event happened today for Vogeltown School - the Whanau fun run! It was an amazing spectacle and it was great to see everyone involved!

Big thanks to Mr Stirling for organising this event - the planning, the process and organisation!

A massive thanks to all the whanau who turned up to watch - I am sure you got some really colourful photos!

Our resident photographer - Mrs Sleep (junior) has some great photos and we will put these in next week's newsletter.

Next Monday all of our learners will bring home their 'Achievement Report' for the year. As the title states, this report is a summary of their achievements over the year. It also indicates how your child is progressing towards becoming a more independent learner, developing the skills and values necessary to make the best choices they can and becoming a confident learner.

Your child’s achievement is measured against a 1-2-3 scale:

1 = Above expectation

2 = At expectation

3 = Working towards

This scale shows where your child is against the relevant curriculum expectations for the student’s current year in reading, writing and maths. Information given is based on a combination of student test scores, classroom assessment and overall teacher judgement of the student’s skills and understanding against the ‘Vogeltown Learner Profile’.

Alongside this, is the effort the learner is making as they work towards and beyond these expectations. At Vogeltown School, we believe this indication of effort is very important.

This report is confidential to the parents concerned. It is hoped that it will provide guidance and encouragement for your child. It concerns only your child and their level of achievement. As natural abilities vary, comparisons with other learners reports would be unfair.

There should be no surprises in this report. We would like to remind parents that the teachers are always happy to discuss the progress and well-being of your child.

A massive congratulations to Mr Bishop who has spent the last two years under the mentorship of Mr Nathan Ransfield, and has now graduated as a 'fully registered teacher'.

Brent has worked really hard with his teaching and professional development to become fully regsistered as a teacher. This requires quite stringent observations, acknowledging the Teaching Standards and a hectic couple of appraisals with Mr Ogle!

Congratulations Mr Bishop - well deserved! All the staff went out for breakfast this morning to celebrate with Mr Bishop. Tu Meke Brent!

A mssive congratulations to Mr Andrea Tait who, on Tuesday, graduated from the University of Waikato with her teaching degree.

Many of you will know Mrs Tait as a 'Teacher Aide' at Vogeltown, but now she has the degree to be a teacher! Well done Andrea - we knew you could do it!

Mrs Tait has had to work tirelessly over the last 3 years being a Teacher Aide at Vogeltown, a mum at home and also complete her degree - not an easy feat!

Ka Rawe Andrea - we are all so proud of you! Check out the awesome photo of Andrea in her 'Graduation outfit' below.

As with every year, we have staff changes at Vogeltown. This year we say goodbye to Mrs Boot who has decided to retire from teaching.

Jane has been working at Vogeltown for the last 13 years, helping out in different roles, but mostly at the Junior school.

Mrs Boot will be taking up her passion for art! We will really miss Mrs Boot around the school. Jane is always willing to help out in any capacity, relieving in rooms, doing extra duties, helping with any family or child!

Thank you so much Jane for everything you have done at Vogeltown - we will miss the 'quiet blue car' coming down the driveway (it is a hybrid), the big smile and the way you make reading a book to the class so much fun!

We had an awesome farewell for Mrs Boot at assembly today!

We had another event this week with Rm 9 and Rm 11 doing their version of 'Caine's aracde'. This has become a tradition for the Paetoki team. Rm 7 and Rm 12 did a different version, and made marble runs!

It was awesome to see the kids creating these wonderful contraptions and then having every class come through and use them - great enterprise work!

If you have not seen the genesis behind Caine's arcade, then see the video below.

Caine's Arcade

Well done to these Vogeltown Learners who received a Principal award at assembly today. This was the last time we give our Principal awards this year.

Rabia Noor, Sayeh Aria, Jerem-Lee Tako-Tahu, Cayden Baker, Dima Jumashev, Tangaroa Roberts, Madhav Murria, Jaxyn Fox, Caitlin Johnson, Zavier Steer, Liam Christensen, Henry Salt, Quinn Hall, Taine Lock, Jarex Bloemen, Lauren Gardner, Katelyn Wang, Cooper Smith, Kirryn Fox, Harper Tyrrell, Flynn Scott, Toby Hunter, Tai Ransfield, Claudia Yukich, Amber Williams, Orion Walker, Bailey Smith, Pearce Donnelly.

Tu Meke team!

As with every year, it is a bit of a sad time when we begin to plan and organise the end of year celebrations for our Year 6 students. This year is no different. Our Year 6 students have been amazing role models to all of our younger kids and it is sad to see them move on to their next school.

This year we have changed things a little bit. We are having two celebration assemblies for the Year 6 cohort.

On Monday 14th December, we will be having a Year 6 Leavers lunch. This is only for our students and will involve the Year 5 students serving the Year 6 students and some ex-Vogeltown students coming back and talking to our Year 6's about their time after Vogeltown.

Then, on Tuesday 15th December, we will be having our Year 6 Leavers Assembly. This begins at 5:30pm in the school hall and all whanau of our Year 6 students are invited. It is an amazing night and will not involve a tea like we have done in previous years.

It would be great to see all our Year 6 students and whanau on this night.

It's that time of year when we need all our library books returned. Our library is an amazing resource but we are still missing a lot of books which have not been returned. Can you please have a good look around at home for any books that are outstanding and bring them back next week. We would much rather have books returned than send out invoices. Thanks whanau!

Well done to Sophie French from Room 1 who won a trophy for her BMX champs over the weekend! Tu Meke Sophie, what an awesome trophy and a nice Xmas photo!

Our school pool will open to all swimming in Term 1 of 2021. We will not be having it open over the Xmas break for whanau. However, we will open it for whanau and sell keys to use the pool in the weekends during Term 1 if we can get a pool committee together.

Anyone who offers to be on the pool committee will be trained on how to check the chemical balance of the pool and be given a key for free. The keys for a term cost $45 with $5 given back at the end of the season when the key is returned. The pool chemical balance has to be checked 3 times per day. It will only need to be checked in the weekends.

If you are keen to help us out, please drop me an email and we can get this organised, timetabled and confirm some training with Mr McAuley at the beginning of Term 1.

For parents of this year's Year 4 and 5 students

Year 5 and 6 Camp is being held on the 24th, 25th and 26th of FEBRUARY in 2021.

If you would like to attend camp, you must fill out a police vetting form as soon as possible. Thanks to all those parents/caregivers who have already filled in a vetting form. We have a good number of parents wishing to come out next year, so thanks heaps!

Vetting forms are available from the school office. You will need 2 forms of ID and our office team can sign you off.

Sports uniforms

Can all sports uniforms please be returned to school by Monday please. There are a lot still outstanding and I need to check them all off before school finishes on Wednesday. This is so I can allocate them again for Term 1 sports which I start organising prior to school starting next year.

Summer Soccer

As the last game of summer soccer was cancelled this week, it has been extended to now finish on Tuesday 15 December. Can I please ask that if your team wishes to play this last game can you do so in plain black or dark coloured tops. I need you to return your school playing tops to school on Monday please as there will not be enough time to collect them after your final game on Tuesday night.

2021 Sports Registrations

Registrations for all Term 1 sports are now open. We are again using our Kindo Shop for you to register your child. Please use the following link which will take you to our Kindo shop page on our website. If you have not used Kindo before you do need to sign up first by using your email address that is held by the school. Please feel free to check with the office if you have any problems with this. http://www.vogeltown.school.nz/kindo-shop/

The following sports are available for next year.

Touch Rugby: Yrs 1-6 Played Wednesday after school at Hickford Park, Bell Block.
