RECOGNIZE!
The third highly effective strategy noted by Dr. Marzano is reinforcing effort and providing recognition. In our classrooms, it is often too easy to focus on negative behaviors and discipline. Furthermore, research shows not all students understand the relationship between effort and outcomes. To be fair, it doesn't help when "A" students brag about never studying!
While these rewards can occasionally be physical, symbolic recognition may prove to be more beneficial and certainly more sustainable.
Ways to reward effort and achievement:
- dedicate a section of your bulletin board to celebrate student success (as seen on Mrs. Barwick's board in the picture below)
- recognize students who show improvement
- include stories in your lessons or weekly routine (Monday Motivation) about people who have overcome obstacles
- hold private conferences with students
Lots of Bang for Her Buck
During this short period of time she ensures that class begins immediately, students have the opportunity to practice concepts, attendance is verified, formative assessment of understanding is handled, AND students receive a special "stamp of approval" when they get the activity completed correctly.
While the concept seems simple, the ease with which she carried out these tasks is quite impressive!
Finding Solutions
Science teacher Ms. Michele McCorkle assists students during a stoichiometry lab where they are expected to find the percent yield of carbon dioxide from the reaction of an alkaseltzer. Students were asked to explain any possible errors if they didn’t have a high percent yield.
