Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
March 11th-15th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will wrap up our unit on Plants and Animals. Students will be completing the 2nd half of their study guide on Monday and Tuesday. The 1st half they received when we did Lessons 1-4. It should be glued into their science notebooks. We will review all week in class, and I encourage the students to use their Discovery Education techbooks to help prepare them. On Friday, they will take their unit test. Next week we will start a mini unit in Social Studies on the Causes of the American Revolution.
- Ms. Uhlenhake, Mrs. Thurston, and Mrs. Leonard's Math/ELA: In reading this week we will analyze first and second-hand accounts. Students will also start a mini unit on Text Dependent Analysis. Mrs. Thurston's class has a reading response due Friday. In math, we will continue our measurement unit with length. Students will have to convert customary units of length (inches, ft, yards) and metric units of length (cm, m, km). They will also have to read a ruler to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. The Measurement Unit Test is targeted for the following Friday 3/22. This may change.
- Mrs. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in ELA we will analyze the symbolism in a short story "A Bouquet of Wild Flowers." They will create a literature web and look for metaphors within this story. We will also be finishing our literary essay on "Buster" and starting a mini unit on Text Dependent Analysis. There is no spelling this week. There is, however, a Word of the Day quiz on Friday. Please remind students to study their last 20 vocabulary words and know the meaning of their suffixes. In math this week we are learning about linear measurement. Students will examine customary and metric units of length. Even at home, please help your children start to see items around them in units of length. For example, the mail box is about 1 yard tall. The door is about 8 feet tall. Etc. This will help them when they have to choose the best unit for given objects.
From Ms. Macanas
Hello Parents!
In math this week, we will be learning how to measure the length of objects, family included! Please ask your student about the measurement project that is due on Friday. In ELA, the students will finish their individual literary essays based on the story, Buster. Please help your students with the edits necessary for their essays. At the end of the year, they are going to be tested on reading a passage and writing an essay. We have significantly downsized the time from the past few essays done in class to one week on their own. This essay is due in class on Wednesday.
Lastly, at the end of the week we will finish our science plant and animal unit with a major unit test. There are a ton of information that was given to them these past few weeks so please help them study their study guides.
I can't believe my time with this class is almost over. I've had a great time full time teaching and even learning from the students! My official last day at FMES is on April 24.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
