AMP Library Recess Makerspace -- Week of May 22
Makerspaces will be canceled next week. They will return the week of May 29 with something new and different added!
Fun Music Friday
This year Ann MacArthur Primary School will be reimplementing “Fun Music Friday” in an effort to maintain a positive and upbeat school climate! Every Friday morning during arrival time students will be greeted with a song selected by their classmates and teachers. Research shows that listening to music can improve mood, reduce stress, lessen anxiety, and provide comfort. Our goal is to create a comfortable, welcoming environment that will allow us to celebrate the end of a hard-working school week with some smiles, good tunes, and positivity. Happy listening, AMP students!
AMP Field Day and 2nd Grade Celebration
AMP Field Day is scheduled for Friday, June 9. Field Day will start at 9:15 a.m. and will last about two hours. As usual, our emphasis will be on good sportsmanship, teamwork, participation, and FUN! Therefore, no scores will be recorded. Spectators are welcome to attend and cheer for all the children. Please note, parents of students in our UPK program are invited to bring their children to AMP at 9:00 am to participate as well.
Students should wear a shirt that matches their team color. Please remember to have your child wear tie or velcro sneakers, but no jewelry that day in order to participate in all the planned Field Day activities. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen as well!
2nd Grade Celebration: After Field Day has ended around 11:15 a.m., we ask that you say, “Goodbye,” to your preschooler, kindergartener or first grader. They will return to school for a fun-filled afternoon. Second grade families are encouraged to stay. The LVE Parents’ Council will provide pizza and a treat for all second graders. Parents, please bring a blanket and a bagged lunch to enjoy with your child under the trees. Additional activities will follow after lunch and our parents are invited to stay as well.
Field Day Rain Date: Monday, June 12th.
The AMP Battle of the Books Continues
May Madness continues! It started with the "Elite 8," but the AMP community has selected their "Final Four." Four special picture books nominated by AMP teachers and staff will continue on to the next round of the May Madness Battle of the Books: Staff Picks Edition.
The Finals:
Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin, illustrated by Daniel Salmieri
Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein
How does it work?: Read the books! Links to read aloud videos for each of the titles can be found here. It is our hope that everyone gets to know all of these wonderful titles! Families are encouraged to listen together and vote. Voting will take place in the students’ Library and Enrichment Google Classroom or through this link.
Which title (and teacher) will win? Stay tuned to find out! Voting on the last two books ends May 31.

School & Community Library Summer Partnership
For years now Locust Valley Elementary School has partnered with the Locust Valley Library to foster the love of reading. But at this time of the year, all eyes are on the summer reading programs. Shown here is librarian Leslie Armstrong, who along with librarian Lauren Wallach, is speaking with all students during their weekly library classes this month. Reading is a big part of the summer program but there are also craft, science, art, recreation, and social activities. Sign-up begins May 30. Check out the Locust Valley Library website for more information www.locustvalleylibrary.org.

LVI Field Day Shirts
LVI’s Field Day is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20th. The rain date is Thursday, June 22nd. During art classes with Mrs. Ettinger, each student will be dying a t-shirt to wear on Field Day. We ask that each student bring in a plain white, 100% cotton t-shirt by Thursday, May 25th. The student’s name and class need to be written on the label with a permanent marker. The shirt should be sent to the classroom teacher. Art classes during the week of June 5th will be conducted for the purpose of dying the t-shirts. We look forward to another successful, enjoyable Field Day.
REMINDER: Before wearing the t-shirt, it MUST be washed separately in COLD water to prevent the colors from running.
