A Message from the Principal

Our band students pictured above with Ms. Mott are constantly preparing for assessments, concerts, and competitions. Our students and staff are always working hard to make the most of the school year. I appreciate all of their collective efforts.
This issue of the Cavalier Contact contains information on course requests for the 23.24 School Year, school events, recognitions, school procedures, athletics, and more.
Thank you for helping us reach our goal for every CAV to develop Confidence in their abilities, to be Accountable for their learning and success, and to build a Vision for what they want to achieve before and after graduation. If you have any questions, then please do not hesitate to contact me at jjust@ccps.us or by calling (804)633-9886 ext 5113.

March CAVS of the Month
Congratulations to the March "CAV of the Month" winners for grades 9–11: Andrea Rodriguez-Vazquez (9th), Jacob Bucceri (10th), and Marley Dagenhart (11th). The students were selected by CHS staff for excelling academically and demonstrating respect, responsibility, and honesty in their actions. Andrea has had a great first year at Caroline. She especially enjoyed being a member of Caroline’s swim team, which she says is like a family to her. Jacob participates in sports (golf and soccer) and really likes being part of a team. He is a member of Caroline High School’s U.S. Army JROTC. Marley has discovered her passion for art as a student at Caroline. Her art classes are her favorite part of the day, and she can’t wait to take additional art and photography classes next year. Congratulations to these students for their well-deserved honor.
Congrats Jamison Abshire!!
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has announced the Heart of the Arts Award Selection Committee chose six section winners – five students and one activities leader. Jamison Abshire, a student at Caroline High School (Milford, Va.), is the NFHS Section 2 winner. His profile is below. Section 2 includes the states of Virginia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
The National High School Heart of the Arts Award was started by the NFHS in 2014. Over the past decade, the NFHS has utilized the honor to commend those individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive heart of the arts and represent the core mission of education-based activities.
Section 2 – Jamison Abshire, student, Caroline County (Virginia) Caroline High School
- Abshire has grown not only as a musician throughout high school, but as a person. Coming into high school, Abshire was described as someone who kept to himself and was particularly uninvolved in school activity programs. Nowadays, Abshire is described as a leader, a creative person, and someone who engages in everything that he does as a teenager, including working a part-time job. Theatre has played a critical role in this transition, improving his communication skills, creativity and performance. Abshire’s passion and love for the arts has shown him that he can take on anything he sets his mind to with hard work, heart and a standard of excellence.

Attendance
CCPS values your child’s attendance at school. The state of Virginia defines chronic absenteeism, and it is reinforced in our Code of Conduct. Students absent from school, excused or unexcused, for 10 percent or more school days are considered chronically absent. We need your help! Please monitor your child’s attendance and help them obtain a high quality education amongst their peers in school. Last year, our school’s absenteeism rate was 30%. As we aim to meet the state accreditation standards we will need to decrease the number of absences significantly. Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education.

CELL PHONE POLICY REMINDER
Policy - Students are permitted to use their cellphones to listen to music through earbuds or headphones in the cafeteria, hallways, and library before school starts and during class period transitions. Cell Phones are to be turned off and placed in the cell phone pocket holder when the student enters the room and must remain in the pocket until the end of class.
If parents need to communicate with a student they can do so between classes, during lunch, or before and after school. In the case of an emergency parents should contact the front office.
Integrated Reading and Writing Exam Info
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has developed a new type of test question for future Standards of Learning (SOL) Reading assessments in grades 5, 8, and high school. Before this new type of test item is administered to students as part of the SOL Reading tests in grades 5, 8, and high school, it is being tried out with students this spring during what is called a field test. Students in grades 5, 8, and high school (usually grade 11) who are scheduled to take the online SOL Reading test will participate in this field test for the new item type.
During the field test, students will read a nonfiction passage online that may be about a history or science topic and then answer four to six questions about what they have read. One question is a writing prompt, or a question that asks students to write about what they have read. Students will complete this online in one session. Currently, the VDOE is only trying out this item type in an online format. In the future, this item type will be available in other formats for students needing an accommodation such as braille, large print, or audio.
Examples of this new item type are available for students, parents, and teachers to view online in what are called “Integrated Reading and Writing Item Sets.” These item sets include examples for grade 5, grade 8, and high school students and can be located using the SOL Practice Items page of the VDOE website. A guide, Integrated Reading and Writing Practice Items, is also available for download and use with these item sets. The guide gives information about each practice item and how students can use the available online tools.
It is important to know that individual test results from the field test will not be available to students, but results of the field test will be used to make decisions about use of the new integrated reading and writing item type on state assessments in the future.
At CAROLINE HIGH SCHOOL, the field test will occur on April 18th. Students may have as much time as they need to complete this test during the school day.
Please be sure to bring a CHARGED Chromebook to testing and see your 1st period teacher for your testing location.
