Things that Might Help You in Your Homeschool- Heart to Heart
Good Morning Heartland Families,
A few reminders this week...
1. Please place your SERVICE orders for December. Please make sure you change ALL dates to say DECEMBER DATES or SERVICES and write "Liability Waiver on File" for repeat vendor orders. Please adjust number of lessons for December if appropriate.
2. Don't forget-- ALL January Services MUST BE ORDERED by DECEMBER 14th. You may place the order now and I will approve on Thursday.
In these last few weeks before our Winter Break, it may seem daunting to start a brand new unit, only to stop for a break. This is the perfect time of year to pull out some of those subscription boxes you've been saving up or prepare your kitchen table for some science experiments. Here is a site that might give you ideas. Now is a good time to look over the Spending Suggestions by Type in the Heartland Ordering Handbook. You will find some goodies here. Think out of the box. What could you add to your fabulous homeschooling adventure?
Also, This is such a good time of year to pick out a good book to read together. Or listen to an audio. There are many great ones on Youtube, Sora or Audible.com. When I was homeschooling, one of my most favorite things to do was to have a big basket of winter themed and holiday books available all December and January. And guess what? I still get that basket out and fill it with the same books and new ones I've added to my collection. Every year, when the kids come home, we still read through them together. Most are picture books with wonderful themes of love, hope and sacrifice. I always taught the importance of reading about winter holidays from different perspectives. This is a great time to introduce cultural celebrations.
*One of my favorites is The Gift of the Magi by O'Henry
*Others... Letters from Father Christmas.
The Snow Goose (For High School age)
The World of Peter Rabbit series
The Polar Express (audio)
Winter Celebrations Around the World (Studies Weekly- video)
Meet the Latkes (Hanukkah audio)
The Steadfast Tin Soldier (One of our family favorites)
The Steadfast Tin Soldier (animation) Beautifully told with no words.
One of my absolute favorites- The Velveteen Rabbit by: Margery Williams
GRANT FUNDING EMAILS
Introducing Heartland's invitation to receive Grant Funding of $700.00
Yesterday, you received an email from me regarding your grant funding invitation.
1. If you received a letter regarding Opting Out, please send me confirmation and then I will send you a signature form through Adobe Sign.
2. If you received an email regarding Opting In, unless you want to Opt Out, there is nothing further for you to do. Funds will be dropped on December 12th.
Reminder--This additional funding $$$ should ONLY be used for:
- Curriculum support including writing, math, science, social studies, and Language Arts that meets the standards for your student's grade level. Curriculum Folder
- Technology Tech Catalog
- One on one tutoring
This additional funding should NOT BE USED for:
- Vendor services
- Supplies/ art/ music
- Field Trips
- Subscriptions that do NOT meet GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS.
You are a great candidate to utilize these funds if:
1. You use all of your general funds on services and you could use additional funding on the three areas above.
2. You have used all of your funds on curriculum and you are needing to make a switch or purchase additional curriculum to support student learning in your family.
****Look over the flyers included in this newsletter and (Google Classroom) and see if these spending suggestions will help strengthen your current curriculum.
3. You have a plan to show that your general funds will be used by the end of the school year and you can use these funds for additional support.
4. Your student needs a tutor.
5. You have been needing to order technology for your students but all of your money has been alloted for curriculum or vendor services.
As you consider if these funds will be beneficial for your educational expenses, ask yourself these questions:
1- What is my writing curriculum?
2- How do I teach classic literature?
3- Is there a curriculum that you have been wanting to try?
4- What are your largest academic areas of concern? Areas of interest?
5- I believe I have “all of our curriculum” but have I considered _________ that I may not have tried in the past?
LP4 -Science Samples Due
1. Science samples will be collected. Due Tuesday, December 13th.
- You have two weeks before they are due. PLEASE PREPARE FOR THIS DATE and turn in a great sample on time or before time.
- Please use Grade Level Statements for guidelines.
2. All LP4 meetings will begin this week and conclude before we leave for Winter break- December 14th.
3.. There will be no LP meetings or samples due for the month of January as all will be completed before the break. Please do your very best to stay with your time chosen. THANK YOU!!

Mr. D CAASPP Test Prep and Support
Learning test-taking strategies is a life skill that will benefit students far beyond doing well on a test. When students learn how to take tests, they're really training themselves to be problem solvers and building executive functioning skills. Mr. D has discovered two secrets to excelling at problem solving, and he wants to share them with your parents and students!
Click here for video from Mr. D and please share the flyer linked below with all students, specifically those 3rd-8th and 11th who will be taking the CAASPP this year!
