What is Hodgkin's Disease?
Hodgkin disease (Hodgkin lymphoma) is a type of lymphoma, a cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are part of the immune system.
the types of lymphomas differ in how they behave, spread, and respond to treatment.
The two types of lymphomas:
- Non-Hodgkin
- Hodgkin disease
The causes of the disease?
There really isn't any specific cause of Hodgkin's disease but people who have Glandular Fever have an increased chance of getting it afterwards
what are the symptoms?
- Painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin
- Persistent fatigue
- Fever and chills
- Night sweats
- Unexplained weight loss — as much as 10 percent or more of your body weight
- Loss of appetite
- Itching
- Increased sensitivity to the effects of alcohol or pain in your lymph nodes after drinking alcohol
Diagnosis and Treatments:
If a person has signs or symptoms that suggest Hodgkin disease, exams and tests are done to find out for sure and, if so, to determine the exact type.
Hodgkin disease are actually more likely to be caused by something else. For example, enlarged lymph nodes are more often caused by infections than by Hodgkin disease. Because of this, doctors often wait a few weeks to see if they shrink on their own as the infection goes away. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to see if they cause the nodes to shrink.
Treatments: (depends on the stage or location of disease)
-Radiotherapy
-Chemotherapy
-Steriods
-or in some cases high doses of bone marrow (transplants)
Prevention:
The exact cause of Hodgkin’s lymphoma is not yet known. There are no known lifestyle changes to lower the risk of developing the cancer.
Having a balanced life style, with eating right and having good nights of sleep will lower the risk of any disease.
When was Hodgkin's disease Discovered?
This Disease was first recorded in 1666 but wasn't officially named its name "Hodgkin's lymphoma" until 1825
