DE COORDINATOR'S CORNER
Leigh Dooley, Interim DE Coordinator
The ACCJC team is coming to visit! The team will be on campus October 14-18, but the team members already have access to 19 DE Classes from Spring 2018. Instructors whose classes are being observed have all been notified. Considering the ACCJC Evaluation Checklist, we believe the team will be focusing on ensuring that our DE classes are Distance Education (as opposed to Correspondence Education), which includes Regular and Substantive Interaction between teachers and students. We may not be perfect, but we think our DE instructors are pretty awesome and, for the most part, highly interactive.
Several of you have expressed concerns about federal requirements for ADA Accessibility. Our campus and UH System policies do ask instructors to take responsibility for ensuring that their distance education materials (in online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes) are ADA compliant, but you are not alone! We want to help, and plan to offer a series of Accessibility workshops (like we did last April) this semester. Watch for ADA Accessibility workshops in October and/or November, and we’ll be visiting department meetings to give updates and tips.
CELTT CORNER
- Did you know that there are a variety of cool new resources that have either been purchased for Kapi’olani staff and faculty to use or are free to play with on the world wide web?
- Purchased Tools for the Campus:
Zoom - Want your own, easy-to-use, online web conferencing tool for general meetings, student counseling, tutoring services, and classroom discussions? CELTT has purchased full licensing of ZOOM. This means unlimited meetings that you can record and download, no limit on length of time, and allows up to 100 participants in each meeting. You can also use the free version of Zoom with limited features but our full licenses remove those limits. If interested, please log into RESOLVE, click the Home tab, then click Instructional Design and Support Requests and request a Zoom account!
Padlet - Digital “pinboards” such as Pinterest have been popular for a while now! Engage the students in your class by using the interactive pinboard called Padlet! Learn more about Padlet in the T3: Tech Tools for Teaching section near the end of this newsletter!
- Free Tools for Everyone:
Flipgrid - Oh, everyone has fun with this one! Increase student interaction by embedding this easy-to-use video clip forum into your class!
Canva - Design quick and easy flyers, banners, and images with Canva’s beautiful templates. We have our TOPPers create images for their online class using this tool!
Adobe Spark - Use beautiful templates to create images, web pages and narrated videos in no time!
Slides Carnival - Powerpoint and Google Slide templates are here for you to choose and use! It’s our go-to site when we need a presentation in a jiffy.
Pixabay - Need free public domain images for your class? This is a great go-to site for free images and illustrations.
Unsplash - Another free public domain images site for your class...except this site has gigantic, beautiful images from photographers!
- Thank you to all those who attended, presented, coordinated and otherwise supported this event! If you have not already done so, please share your feedback via the Evaluation Form - our coordinators and presenters greatly appreciate it!

FS DE COMMITTEE CORNER
The Faculty Senate Distance Education Committee meets every first Friday of the month and has been discussing the following items:
ProctorU - ProctorU provides secure live and automated online proctoring services for academic institutions. KCC faculty are piloting online proctoring services with ProctorU and we hope to have the service available to all online faculty and their students in Spring 2019.
Syllabus Template - Did you know that there is a Syllabus Template for online faculty? We are currently in the process of editing the document and adding policies and information that should be in every syllabus.
Ready2Run - We are creating a checklist for online faculty to use before their course starts to ensure the course is ready to run.
Online & Hybrid Class Definitions - We are coming up with standardized definitions for online and hybrid classes to be sent to Faculty Senate for review.
Banner Course Comments - We are reviewing course comments for online courses in Banner to ensure students have the necessary information before registering for an online course, such as proctored tests, etc.
If you have any questions, please contact the FS DE Committee Chair Nadine Wolff (nwolff@hawaii.edu).
ONLINE LEARNER SUCCESS CORNER
Success for Online Learners (SŌL)
With your tremendous support, more than 1,400 students have completed SŌL Module 1: Be Ready, focusing on student readiness and preparation for online learning, since the first pilot in Spring 2018! Be on the lookout for summary data at the end of the semester, which will include the Spring, Summer, & Fall 2018 pilots. SŌL Module 2: Be Connected (focused on connecting with learning and student support services and resources) is in development and you’ll be hearing more about that soon as well.
