In Spring 2018, DE students were invited to take a survey about their online educational experiences. We’re still processing the qualitative responses, but we thought you’d like a glimpse into what they think.
What did you like about learning online?
More flexible for my work schedule/life situation (86%)
I could do it on my own time (77%)
Accommodated where I live, e.g. save time & gas or live off-island (55%)
What were your challenges with learning online?
I need more self-discipline and motivation to complete classwork (40%)
Once I fell behind, it was difficult to catch up (22%)
My instructor is slow to respond (19%)
More to come next month!
We want to hear from you! The bi-annual DE Faculty Survey will be released on September 4th and will close on September 25th. When you receive the survey in your UH email inbox, please take the time to fill it out and let us know how we can improve distance education at Kapiʻolani!
Coming in October: ACCJC Site Visit
Yes, it’s time. Kapi‘olani CC will be hosting reviewers from ACCJC on October 15-18, 2018. Even before they arrive, though, members of the team will be reviewing a selection of DE classes from Spring 2018 for RSI (Regular and Substantive Interaction) and student identity verification. Come to the Panel Discussion about RSI at RECHARGE ‘18 (11:00 - 12:00, upstairs in Lama) for more information about what constitutes RSI, and this ACCJC Checklist for Evaluating Compliance with Federal Regulations and Related Commission Policies gives a little insight about some things the reviewers will be evaluating during their visit.
If you are anticipating the need to have test(s) proctored at the Kapiʻolani Testing Center, be sure to include that information in your syllabus. Please refer to the UH System Proctoring Services information page. This fall, we will be piloting online proctoring services with ProctorU and hope to have the service available to all online faculty and their students in Spring 2019. Please watch for announcements in the coming months.
