Margaret Werts and Cate Smith Named Recipients of a Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies 2017-2019 Graduate Research Associate Mentoring Program Award
Dr. Margaret Werts, a professor in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education, has been named a recipient of a Cratis D. Williams School of Graduate Studies 2017-2019 Graduate Research Associate Mentoring Program (GRAM) Award. Werts will be collaborating with Dr. Cate Smith, an assistant professor in the Department of Reading Education and Special Education.
GRAM Awards are designed to provide research-active faculty with the opportunity to mentor talented graduate students through collaborative work on the faculty members' research projects.
Allison Collins, the student they will be mentoring, is currently completing her bachelor’s degree in special education as well as K-12 licensure requirements for teaching students with mild to moderate disabilities. Collins will then begin graduate studies in reading education at Appalachian.
Cassidy Milosh Inducted Into the Cratis D. Williams Society
Cassidy Milosh, originally from Morehead City, NC, has been inducted into the Cratis D. Williams Society.
This society is designed to include each year’s top graduates of the Cratis D. Williams Graduate School at Appalachian State University – approximately the top 2%. Students are chosen based upon their academic performance, their engagement in their discipline, and their potential for leadership.
Milosh attended Appalachian State for her undergraduate degree in Special Education and became an Accelerated Admissions (4+1) graduate student in the Reading Education master’s program just before her senior year. She graduated in May 2017; her class numbered approximately 400 students.

New principals named at Parkway, Cove Creek schools
The Watauga County Board of Education voted unanimously on May 8 to appoint new principals at Cove Creek and Parkway schools. Kelly Walker, who currently serves as a Watauga High School assistant principal, will take the lead at Cove Creek, while Parkway Assistant Principal Patty Buckner is set to head Parkway School.
Walker, who has served at WHS since 2013, earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies at Appalachian State University, a Master of Arts degree in history from N.C. State University and a Master of Science degree in School Administration from Western Carolina.
Buckner, who will begin her tenure as principal at Parkway School next year, has 11 years of experience in WCS — including the last two years as assistant principal at Parkway. Buckner received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Columbia College and a Master of School Administration from Appalachian State University. She recently completed the school system’s yearlong professional development program for aspiring school leaders.
A National Award, Appalachian and F.A.R.M. Cafe: A Story of Hunger, Humanitarianism and Heart
Rev. Dr. Chris May, adjunct professor at Appalachian State University and Dr. Linda Coutant (pictured), Reich College of Education alumna and senior writer, editor and SEO specialist in University Communications, were front and center at the 2017 James Beard Awards gala in Chicago in early May. The elegant hors d’oeuvres and wine served offered stark contrast to the cause that brought them there – hunger in the High Country and beyond.
Coutant and May were on hand to see Denise Cerreta, creator of One World Cafe and One World Everybody Eats (OWEE), accept the 2017 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year Award.
OWEE is an international nonprofit supporting a network of pay-what-you-can community cafes that help alleviate hunger. F.A.R.M. Cafe in Boone is one of them.
Dr. David Stegall Named Northwest North Carolina Superintendent of the Year
In a unanimous vote of the Northwest Superintendent’s Council, Dr. David Stegall, Superintendent of the Newton-Conover City School district in Newton, North Carolina, has been named the Northwest Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Northwest Regional Educational Service Alliance. Dr. Stegall’s honor as one of the top eight superintendents statewide places him in the running for State Superintendent of the Year.
Dr. Stegall received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; a master's degree in education from Gardner-Webb University; an education specialist degree in education administration from Appalachian State University; and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Appalachian.
If selected for the honor of State Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Stegall would serve as a sitting advisor to the North Carolina State Board of Education, in addition to running as a finalist for the National Superintendent of the Year.
Community Service Opportunity: Proctors Needed for EOG/EOC Testing
After reaching out to our most local school districts, they are still in need of proctors for EOG/EOC testing:
- End of Grade Proctoring: May 18-19, 2017 at Watauga County Schools
- End of Course Proctoring: May 25-31, 2017 at Watauga High School
If you are interested in helping, please complete the following forms:
It was suggested by the district that we complete a background check first and possibly have two people placed at every elementary/middle school. However, Hardin Park still needs 40 people to help! The high school is also in great need of proctors! We all understand this crucial time and your assistance is greatly appreciated!
Questions? Please contact Trisha Caviness for more information.

CAMPUS EVENTS & RESOURCES
Appalachian to Conduct Full-scale Emergency Exercise May 16
Appalachian State University will conduct a full-scale emergency exercise:
Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2017
Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 noon
Location: In and around the Plemmons Student Union
The exercise will simulate an active shooter on campus, and is designed to test response and communication during an emergency. The university’s emergency website – www.appstatealert.com – will post updates about the training exercise. While this is only a test, if you witness anything that raises suspicions or if you have concerns about your immediate safety, call University Police at 828-262-8000 or 9-1-1.
Traffic near campus may be limited at times during the exercise, and one or more additional buildings may be involved in the exercise. Area residents and drivers will likely see law enforcement and emergency response vehicles and personnel along King, Hardin and Rivers Streets and in and around the Plemmons Student Union.
The training exercise will involve more than 100 participants, including those from University Police, Boone Fire Department, Watauga Emergency Medical Services, Watauga County Rescue Squad, Watauga Medical Center and local law enforcement agencies. Participants will wear either a colored vest or arm band.
The exercise is coordinated by Appalachian’s Department of Environmental Health, Safety, and Emergency Management (EHS&EM). We would like to remind members of our campus community that University Police offers training to departments on how to respond to an active shooter in the workplace or on campus. The training is approximately 60 - 90 minutes with response techniques and Q. and A.
Additionally, we encourage all members of our campus community to take this opportunity to view the “Shots Fired” video on the University Police website (university login required). The video takes less than 4 minutes to watch and will help you get in the right mindset if you are ever confronted with an active shooter.
For questions about the exercise, active shooter training or the “Shots Fired” video, call University Police at 828-262-2150.
