New Way of Thinking
It’s easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than thinking your way into a new way of acting
One day in early June I was jogging and I realized that it had been 20 years since my first marathon. That seemed almost too difficult to believe. But yes, it was in 1995 in St. Louis that I clocked my PR in my first marathon (3:28!). Even more incredible to believe was that it had been 15 years since I had last run a marathon.
So what happened? I guess I found excuses (job, family, aches and pains) to derail my hopes. 20 years and easily 20 pounds later, I had convinced myself that I was too old, too heavy, too busy…the excuses have piled up. But I wanted to! I had this vision that I could overcome all of that and cross that finish line. I set out to determine if I could run another marathon. So far, so good. I’m up to 35 miles a week (18 miles for the long run yesterday morning) and on track to run a very slow Spokane Marathon on October 11th.
You can’t run a marathon unless you enjoy running. And I’ve rediscovered my love of running. The past few months have been joyful—planning, stretching, running, recovering, logging. Repeatedly. Where did I find the time? Time has slowed down as I have found myself calmer, more focused, and less impatient. I’ve enjoyed the solitude of long runs, the challenge of tempo runs, the thrill of speed work, and the ease of recovery runs. More importantly, I have proven myself wrong and have a new way of thinking.
