BARKSDALE ENEWS
May 26, 2022
Wishing you all a safe and fun summer! See you on August 10, 2022!
A Letter from Mrs. Caplinger
As we close out this school year, I wanted to share some parting words. It has been a blessing to be a part of this wonderful Barksdale family for the past 11 years. The Barksdale community (students, staff, parents, and families) has made such an impact on me. I am thankful for every minute of every day I’ve had the opportunity to serve. Collaborating with you to build a school that is dedicated to children has been a dream and blessing. Thank you all for sharing your children with me and working beside me to create a place for them to grow emotionally, socially, and academically. I am proud and know that this fine school will continue to rise to every challenge and care for children under the leadership of Dr. Minyard. Thank you for your commitment, your involvement in school activities, and for all your support in caring for these children. Please continue to encourage them and help them be successful in the future.
I want to thank the PTA members and the PTA Executive Board for the time and effort they have contributed to providing the students and staff at Barksdale with the resources necessary to have a quality program for the students. We recognize these are volunteer positions, and we could not do it without you.
We would like to say goodbye to our awesome fifth graders. The fifth-grade students were a delight this year, and we wish them the very best in middle school. I am confident they will rise to every challenge they will face, just as they have this school year. To our families who will not be returning next school year, we wish you all the best and we will certainly miss you!!
Finally, we would like to say goodbye to our staff members who will be parting to do other things next school year. We especially like to wish our very own assistant principal, Elyse Daly, who has served Barksdale both as a teacher and as an assistant principal for the past 11 years the best at Stinson Elementary. She will be the assistant principal there next year and will be very missed by all! She has been a supportive administrator for the past three years and definitely will be missed. We also want to congratulate Lori McCaffrey who is retiring this year. She has been a Barksdale staff member for many years and we will miss all the great things she has done for our students and school. Our enrollment has declined and the following teachers have been reassigned to Gulledge Elementary: Stacy White, Mary Robbins, and Chelsea Scoville. Claudia Paiz has also been reassigned to Daffron Elementary. Ashley Shamburger is staying home with her newborn baby and the following teachers will be leaving to teach at different schools or following a different passion: Yash Gangal, Cheryl Lombardo, Saadia Baber, and Saba Malik. We wish them the very best in their new adventures.
As you plan for the summer, please remind your children to read each day. You can continue to work on Dreambox throughout the summer.
I want to thank you for the wonderful students you send us each day. Thank you for your trust in us to provide the best education possible for your children. It is an honor to serve Barksdale for all these years!
Have a wonderful summer!
-Jennifer Caplinger

Top 10 Summer Activities
PARENTING TIPS: Top 10 Summer Activities
Summer is just around the corner. Kids will have lots of free time. It is important that kids are productive with their free time and are not engaged in an excess amount of screen time. Below are some tips of what you and your child can do.
COPING STRATEGIES
I have had many discussions with parents over the years about ways to help their children handle their strong feelings. Strong feelings are hard for all of us, especially children who are often scared of their reaction. Here are some tips to help your child deal with their strong feelings.
AWARENESS Often, children react to their feelings and they are not really aware of why they reacted the way that they did. It is helpful if they can identify the action and the feeling that came from that action. In our guidance lessons, we have been trying to help students understand that there are not any good or bad feelings. ALL feelings are fine. It is the way that we react to the feeling that might not be ok.
RECOGNIZING OUR BODY SIGNALS We will often feel our feelings somewhere in our body. Sometimes our heart beats faster, our stomach or head starts hurting, our muscles in our hands tighten, or our jaw clenches. These are clues that we are having a strong feeling and we are no longer calm.
IDENTIFYING COPING STRATEGIES THAT WORK FOR US Once we recognize that we are having a strong feeling (anger, frustration, fear…), using coping strategies are often great techniques to help children calm down. It is not enough just to tell children these techniques. They need to practice them to make them effective. For example, slow breathing is a fabulous way to help calm our body down but it is not the easiest one to master at first. Practicing with your children when they are calm is a great way to perfect this strategy.
DEALING WITH THE FEELING Once your child is in a calm state, it is important to talk about what caused them to have their strong feelings. Because they are now calm, they will have the ability to talk through with what bothered them and hopefully come up with some solutions the next time they encounter this situation. Helping them to see a couple of different choices will give them options if they are needed in the future.
Below you will find some links to different breathing techniques. We are sharing several as not all will work for everyone. Find the one that fits your child’s needs.

THOUGHTFUL LISTENING
As parents, we often want to fix difficult things for our children. It is important to instill confidence in our children and allow them to figure out how to solve their own difficulties. Most likely, all they need is someone to listen to them and guide them in the right direction. Click on the link below to find effective ways to be a better listener for your child.

PISD has a variety of resources available to parents. Some of these resources include parenting workshops, social emotional strategies, 1 on 1 parent partnering sessions and more. Click on the link below to find out more about what is available.

Renner Pre-Athletics Physical Education Class-Fall 2022
ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS:
Parents, we have put together a list of required items to participate in the Renner Pre-Athletics Physical Education Class in the fall. As we discussed at 5th grade night, this class is designed for the multi-sport athlete. A lot of the work will be outside so boys and girls may need the Renner Hoodie. Along with these items each male student will be required to provide their own combination lock for their locker. The girls' lockers will have combination locks already on the locker. All students will dress out on a daily basis in our locker rooms. Again, this class is not for the one sport athlete such as “only basketball”. Which is why we require football cleats. If you have any question, please email me at kevin.kelln@pisd.edu or call me at 469 752 5800 or my cell 972 816 7133. Thank You, Kevin Kelln Athletic Coordinator, Renner Middle School
