Liberty Family Newsletter

December 2020 - January 2021

Ilka Oberst, Principal and Jeff Rotherham, Assistant Principal

Dear Liberty Families,

This has been a year full of challenges for our Liberty community and beyond, but we have accepted them and worked through them together with flexibility and patience. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we will once again be 100% online learning when we return on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

During winter break, we encourage our families to relax, read a book together, play games together, and save the electronic devices for another time. Our students have spent plenty of time in front of their screens and deserve some one-on-one and family time. Whatever it is you do, keep it simple and enjoy this time to reconnect and rejuvenate.

Remember, it’s the simple things in life. It has been said that happiness doesn't make us grateful, rather, gratitude makes us happy. Again, we are so thankful we have the privilege of serving our Liberty community. We appreciate all of the connections made so far this year, the patience and of course the support. We look forward to an even more successful second semester.

From the Liberty staff, we wish all of our students and families a safe and relaxing break and a Happy New Year. We look forward to welcoming you back to 100% online learning on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Be sure to note our phased return schedule below.

Phased Return In-Person After Winter Break

Omaha Public Schools will begin the second semester of this school year with a phased return in-person. Staff will teach from their classroom and students will start the semester as scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 5 using their district-provided device from home.

The dates for that phased return in-person:

  • Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021: All students begin with remote instruction following the normal bell schedule.
  • Monday, Jan. 11, 2021: Early Childhood Special Education, return in-person five days a week.
  • Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021: All students return in-person following the Family 3/2 Model attendance calendar.

In-person instruction will continue with the Family 3/2 Model in the weeks that follow Jan. 19. At this time, there are no district-wide changes to our instructional model between now and winter break.

Supporting Your Child's Success

Dear Liberty Families,

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these challenges together! We are so grateful for your hard work and responsiveness as we work to make remote learning and the Family 3/2 model successful. We know many households are feel stress and uncertainty during the coronavirus pandemic.

Here are some suggestions to help students and families manage during Winter Break and beyond:

  • Establish a routine, even on days off. A flexible structure with regular wake up, meal times, and bed time helps children know what to expect.

  • Encourage your students to take a break from screens whenever possible.

  • Set reminder alarms on the iPad for wake up and Morning Meetings.

  • Reach out for support if you notice a change in your student's mood.

The Liberty Counseling Office, (531)299-1740, can meet with students in-person or remotely and suggest additional resources during school hours.

The Nebraska Family Helpline, (888)866-8660, also has resources for families and is available 24/7.
