EHS Students Qualify for History Day State Contest
Six students from Elizabeth High School qualified for the National History Day in Colorado State Contest after placing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the Central Plains Regional in April.
National History Day in Colorado (NHDC) is a social studies and literacy program for 4th-12th grade students housed at the University of Colorado Denver. The curriculum is implemented across the state and over 25,000 students complete projects annually. The NHDC program is aligned with Colorado State Social Studies and Literacy Standards, and is a sanctioned capstone project. It is an affiliate of a national program.
Typically, NHDC welcomes nearly 4,000 students, teachers, families, and volunteers to the CU Denver campus for the State Contest on the first Saturday in May. This year, due to COVID-19, all operations were transitioned online. Nearly 750 students qualified and competed.
EHS Senior Ashley Morgan competed in the senior individual documentary category with her project, “The Heart of Jazz Music in Colorado: Five Points Denver.” Junior Austyn Aikin competed in the senior individual documentary category with her project, “Chernobyl Wildlife.” Junior Sydney Davidson competed in the senior individual website category with her project, “The Impact of Frances Wisebart Jacobs on Charity in Denver.” Sophomores Kaylie Bott, Morgan Mortensen, and Elle Mowbray competed in the senior group website category with their project, “Riding Into a New World: The Introduction of Horses Into Native American Culture.” Bott, Mortensen, and Mowbray were also awarded a Special Award from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University for the Best Project on Western History.
Mr. Manser Kierstead sponsors National History Day at Elizabeth High School. In the 2020-2021 school year, it will be offered as a social studies elective.
