Marinette Middle School: Anchored in the Journey of the Whole Student
Middle school is a time of significant growth for students academically, but also, and maybe more importantly, physically, socially, and emotionally. At Marinette Middle School (MMS), the staff and the rest of the school community are committed to providing support to the whole student in an engaging and safe learning environment.
At the core of the middle school philosophy is the emphasis on the importance of relationships in the life of a young adolescent. Research shows that one of the most impactful deterrents to risky behavior is for adolescents to have a trusted adult outside of the home environment. Staff at Marinette Middle School strive to be that trusted adult to their students. Our hopes, and our intentions, are that each and every MMS students can identify at least one trusted adult within the building. These trusted adults are invaluable as that student journies through the four years spent within the middle school walls.
As we enter into the school year, please look for ways that you as parents/guardians, family members, and community members can join in growing positive relationships with our middle school youth and contribute to their academic and social/emotional well-being. It might be volunteering in an after school club, volunteering with the PTO or Booster Club, contributing to a classroom discussion or project, or it might be providing resources to a middle school student for her Passion Project. If you want to get a jump start, please feel free to contact Michael Whisler, Marinette Middle School principal, at (715) 735-1505 or mwhisler@marinette.k12.wi.us.
Message from Mr. Hanson
From the Associate Principal’s Desk
Dear MMS parents and guardians:
As we begin the 2017-18 school year I would like to share with you our commitment to improving school attendance. As I am sure you are aware, school attendance is a key indicator to academic success. Students that attend school regularly and consistently are more likely to achieve academic success and make better social connections than those that miss frequently. As part of our plan to continuously improve, this school year a school-wide attendance goal has been established, students will be positively acknowledged for exceptional attendance, and an attendance team is being established to work with students and families in need of supports. I ask that you please help us in our efforts by establishing an evening curfew/bedtime for your student and assuring that he/she attends regularly. As has been past practice, please contact the MMS office at (715) 735-1500 in the event that your student needs to be excused. I’m looking forward to a great 2017-18 school year!
Looking to Get Involved at MMS...Join the PTO or the MMS Booster Club!
Some people believe that as students grow older and “graduate” to the middle school, parents and guardians are needed and wanted less. The truth could not be any further from the truth. The reality is that middle school students need AND want their parents, guardians, and other trusted adults in the life even more.
So, as you think about how you can be involved in your student’s middle school career, please consider joining the MMS Parent/Teacher Organization. There has not been a formal PTO for a number of years, and that is going to change! If the PTO is not quite your speed, what about the MMS extra-curricular and co-curricular Booster Club.
There will be an organizational meeting for both the PTO and Booster Club Tuesday, October 3rd at Marinette Middle School in the LMC from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. This will be our attempt at getting the PTO up and running in a formal capacity and switching Booster Club leadership. Whether you have experience with a PTOs, Booster Clubs, or not, you are invited to attend...and bring your ideas!
If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Mike Whisler - principal - at mwhisler@marinette.k12.wi.us.
Student Drop-off and Pick-up Update
Thank you to all who drop off and pick up MMS students. With minimal difficulty, we have been able to successfully change our traffic patterns and expectations. The bus lanes have become much safer for students and bus drivers alike. This will continue throughout the remainder of the school year. A few reminders:
If you are dropping off and/or picking up on Water Street, please be sure to pull as far forward as possible so as to not block the Terrace Avenue drive (where the orange cones are). Buses, staff, and visitors do need to enter at Terrace Avenue parking area.
If you are in need of visiting the MMS Main Office during student drop off time, you may ask the staff attendant to move the cones so that you may park in the Terrace Avenue parking lot.
Student should utilize crosswalks whenever possible. Staff and dedicated crossing guards will assist as possible.
If you have any questions and/or concerns about MMS student drop-off and/or pick-up please contact the school’s main office.
Curious About the New Math Curriculum?
Are you curious about the new middle school math curriculum? Are you aware that there is a new math curriculum at the middle school? Either way, Marinette Middle School and Marinette High School parents and guardians will have an opportunity to learn about all of the great changes - and the reasons behind them.
Please join MMS and MHS staff and administration for an informational evening about the new CPM mathematics curriculum. This event will be held Monday, September 25th from 6:00pm - 7:00pm at Marinette High School.

PBIS Videos
This summer a team of students, under the guidance of Mr. Schwaba, developed “Cool Tool” videos that teach some of our MMS expectations. I encourage you to watch the videos as they are both informative, and entertaining. They provide some fun insight into appropriate behaviors at MMS. Enjoy!
