Welcome Back from the Principal!
Thank you for helping make the transition back to school go so seamlessly. We are off to a great start and that is in large part to all of your help.
I just wanted to remind everyone that due to the district's new safety plan, our doors will remain locked in the morning until 7:30. At 7:30, we will only unlock the main front door off of Grand Avenue, and the doors near the parking lot. We will have the vestibule areas open in both locations though in case students arrive a little earlier and need to get out of the inclement weather.
Also, Grand Avenue has started up an Instagram page. We can be found at sauk.prairie.gaschool. Please feel free to follow us and see what is happening in our school.
If you have questions, please let me know.

GUIDANCE NEWS
Counselor Connection
Every year, many children start school with excitement of moving onto a new classroom, but for some children it can be a scary time. The beginning of the school year is a time marked with many new experiences. For example, a new teacher, new classmates, a new schedule/routine, a new school, new expectations, and possibly a new set of friends will need to be made.
During this adjustment time, children can display their feelings of being nervous, scared or worried by having physical symptoms, such as a stomachache, headache, irritability, crying and loss of sleep. However, some children will ask their parents, teacher, school counselor, or multiple adults in their lives for ideas about dealing with their feelings. In any case, it is important for those adults to listen to the child’s concerns. Even though the concerns may seem minimal to adults, any concern a child has is a big deal to the child at the time.
The school counselor is available to meet with all students, parents and staff at Grand Avenue. There is no problem so small or big that we cannot handle them together! If a child would like to meet with Miss Sadie, they will simply ask their teacher. Miss Sadie will then work with the teacher to schedule a meeting in a timely manner. Parents/guardians can also request that their student meet with Miss Sadie for a variety of reasons, social, emotional or academic in nature.
The school counselor will be in each classroom weekly to provide support for the teacher and students, or to conduct a classroom guidance lesson. All students will also spend part of WIN time throughout the year with Miss Sadie learning valuable life skills at each grade level.
All classrooms will start guidance lessons in September. Third graders will discuss how to make and keep friends by reviewing things that help or hurt friendships, and the “Stop, Opt, GO” tool they can use to calm themselves before making a choice. Fourth grade will focus on characteristics of a good partner and how to fill others’ buckets, so that they are able to cooperate with anyone in group situations. Fifth grade will learn three things to consider when making decisions, and how to respectfully make decisions without losing friends by using assertive communication.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORT ELEMENTARY FAN REMINDERS
These are a few reminder to keep our young fans safe as we begin the fall sport season.
- Fans 5th grade and under need to be accompanied by an adult. Children can sit with their parents, or we have a designated area (north west corner of the the stadium area) for children to stretch out or play catch (we will have nerf balls provided).
- The middle school section (bleacher in the north end zone) is for middle school students only.
- Backpacks/ book bags/carry ins/ skateboards/ balls, etc are not allowed. If these items are brought to events, they will be left at the main gate at the responsibility of the owner (gate workers are not responsible)
- We have family passes. This is a great way for young families to save on admission. $130 will cover home events for up to 5 family members who enter the gate together. Please see the high school athletic website for pass and punch card options and details.
We hope you enjoy the season, if you have any questions, please contact the high school athletic office.
Thank you

Homecoming & Upcoming Dates to Remember!
Dear Grand Avenue Parents,
In an effort to share the excitement of Homecoming week at the high school, Grand Avenue staff would like to invite the students at our school to participate in one of the dress-up days and attend the parade during homecoming week. Homecoming week is September 16-20, 2019 and the theme is “Mardi Gras.” Grand Avenue staff and students will support the Eagles by wearing school colors the day of the game.
Friday – School Spirit Day (school colors)
The parade begins at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 20, and Grand Avenue has been invited to watch it in front of the high school. All staff and students are welcome to watch the parade along Grand Avenue by the 9th street intersection. Students are also encouraged to bring non-perishable items to add to the SPHS National Honor Society float as it passes. Parents/guardians are welcome to help chaperone the parade. Please contact your student’s teacher if you are interested in helping.

FOOD SERVICE FEATURES
Food Service is excited to announce some NEW features in Family Access. You have the ability to access your child’s meal statement, key pad number and set an Ala Carte limit. When you are logged into Family Access, click on the Food Service tab. In the top right corner is the Meal Statement. To set an Ala Carte Limit, click on it and you can choose an amount to limit per day or do not allow Ala Carte Purchases. Please realize at the elementary level, students do not have the option to choose an ala carte option. So, if you want your child/children to be able to purchase just a milk, please do not block the ala carte option. If you have any questions please call Tammy at 643-5983.
ATTENDANCE
If you call your child in with an illness, we would like you to please let us know the symptom/symptoms, i.e., a fever, sore throat, headache, cough, etc., that your child may have.
MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
For example, if your child suffers from migraine headaches, we will NOT be able to distribute medication to him/her without an AMA on file. The AMA form can be found on the District web site. In order for medications to be distributed, pills must be in a prescription bottle with proper labeling. Students may carry inhalers with them, however, an AMA form must be on file in the office.
If you have any questions regarding medication distribution, please contact Katie Homar, RN for the district at 643-1965.
