Principal's Message
Dear Terra Linda Families,
We are looking forward to seeing each of you at our upcoming conferences next week. If you haven't scheduled a time to meet with your student's teacher, please call the office so that we can set up a workable time.
This fall, our teachers have been meeting with each student to determine his or her Independent Reading Level using the Independent Reading Level Assessment (IRLA). This is a wonderful tool that helps a teacher identify not only the level at which books are fun, fast, and easy for a student, but also the next instructional step to move students along the reading continuum. At the PTC meeting Wednesday night, our Reading Specialist Kristy Edmunds explained how students progress from the "Read to Me" IRLA level through the "Purple" IRLA level and beyond. Be sure to check with your student's teacher at conferences to see what your student could be working on at home to grow as a reader!
For students to grow in their reading, they need to read good fit books at their independent reading level. But they also need to read books they enjoy and listen to books above their reading level to build comprehension and fluency.
How can you help at home? Look for books that fit each of these categories and have fun reading at home!
- The book they hear - this builds comprehension and fluency skills
- The book they work with (a Good Fit Book!) - this builds decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills
- The book they enjoy - this builds motivation to keep working at learning to read!
The Units of Study for Teaching Reading:
- provide state-of-the-art tools and methods to help students move up the ladder of text complexity
- build foundational reading skills and strategies
- support the teaching of interpretation, synthesis, and main idea
- offer classroom structures to support inquiry and collaboration

Be sure to check out this website for more information, too!
We hope to see you at every PTC meeting this year to learn about different topics. In November, we will share about the various Middle School Options programs. At the December meeting, we will focus on how we are teaching math, including the many strategies we are helping students develop. January's meeting will focus on The Units of Study for Teaching Reading. Stay tuned for more topics!
Kind Regards,
Christy

Lost and Found
We have a lost and found cart in our cafeteria. Students are welcome to look for lost items during lunches or before or after school. We will place items in the lobby during conferences next week. Please take a look! Also, please write your student's name on coats, lunch boxes, water bottles, sweatshirts - anything they can set down and misplace. We return items that are labeled. Thanks for your help!
Emergency Drills
Each year, our students and staff participate in a variety of emergency drills, including Fire Drills, Earthquake Drills, Lockout Drills, and Lockdown Drills. Teachers review the expectations with students regularly and we practice them throughout the school year so students are prepared in the event of an actual emergency.
Here is a link to the Standard Response Protocol our district follows for emergencies.
Parents/Guardians, volunteers, and visitors are expected to participate in all emergency drills at Terra Linda or any other Beaverton School District site. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the protocol.
