The Scoop on 4th Grade
with Miss Lejsner, Mrs. Napoleoni and Mrs. Smith
September 21, 2018
Dear 4th grade parents,
Just a friendly reminder to please send a note or office phone call with any change in end of the day dismissal plans. We seemed to have a lot of confusion in regards to today's practice for the Mary Poppins tryouts. As teachers we just want to make sure that your child is getting to where they need to be safely. Thank you for partnering with us and keeping the communication lines open.
Curriculum Corner
Reading & Writing
The students are doing an amazing job at their assigned stations. We look forward to beginning their reading groups next week. Guided reading is such a special time in the day because we get to teach, challenge, and encourage our fourth graders to grow as readers! Over the past two weeks, the students have learned how to write a summary about a fiction story. They will use this skill at the read to self station during daily five. In addition to the summary they will have to write a paragraph on their own thinking about the read aloud book to get full credit for a reading response.
In shared reading, our focus has been story elements, character traits, and making inferences about the characters and their traits. Students make inferences by combining what they already know about people and what they read in the text. Be sure to ask your child the difference between a character trait and an emotion.
Math
Has your son or daughter had the opportunity to teach the class how to solve a math problem yet? We have had continuous practice with comparing, rounding, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Subtraction has been a little daunting to some of our students so please continue to encourage your child to practice math facts at home. By knowing their facts, the lessons on subtracting multi-digit numbers will be easier to tackle. We will be taking our Unit 1 test next week covering the topics of standard form, word form, expanded form, rounding, comparing numbers, large number addition and subtraction, as well as words problems. Unit 2 will be covering multiplication.
Science/Social Studies
Everyone enjoyed working on their owl pellets and mammal skeletons. We tested this week and will move on to social studies chapter 1. This chapter focuses on the four different social scientists.
