Black History Month - Sharing Our Cultural Roots: The prefects are organizing programming for Black History Month in February, and they invite anyone with ideas or suggestions to please reach out to them. The theme for this year is ‘Getting to the Roots,’ and students hope to plan events that help us uncover some of the connections between black cultural traditions and modern trends. As part of this event, the prefects would like to feature profiles about our black students and staff so we can learn more about them and their families. If your child identifies as black and is willing to participate, please fill out this Google Form. The mini-biographies will be put up as posters around the school.
Covid-19 Zoom Check-in with Mrs. Funamoto: Mrs. Funamoto will be available to parents via zoom (Mrs. Funamoto’s link) tomorrow, Friday, January 21 from 10:30 to 11:00 am to answer any questions or concerns.
Reporting Positive Covid Cases in our school: Prior to January 2022, all schools were required to report positive COVID cases to Public Health. Public Health would then outline for the school what protocols to follow on a case-by-case basis. At Selwyn House, we communicated all positive COVID cases to our entire school community. As of January 2022, Public Health is no longer involved when there are positive COVID cases in the school. However, the administration is keeping track of all COVID-related absences. In an effort to continue to be completely transparent, we will list the number of COVID positive cases per class in this section starting January 28. It will be updated weekly on Friday afternoons (unless there is a school holiday).
Management of cases and outbreaks: As the public health authorities are no longer carrying out epidemiological studies, they will not order the closure of classes or schools. However, if at least 60% of the students in the class are in isolation using the isolation criteria for COVID-19 set out by the public health authorities, a school service centre, a school board or a private educational institution can transition a class to distance education, but only two calendar days after reaching this percentage. In such cases, written notification must be sent to parents at least 24 hours before transitioning to distance education. Additionally, if there is a lack of staff, once the educational institution has implemented all the measures in its contingency plan and can no longer ensure that an education stakeholder will be present in class, a class may transition to distance learning. For more information please visit, COVID-19: For unvaccinated children under 12 without symptoms and travelling with fully vaccinated parents or guardians for information regarding travel outside of Canada. Please scroll down and pay special attention to the section titled “What your child cannot do for the next 14 days” for particulars on his return to school after travel.
