News and Information about LaPerche Elementary-January 2018
Happy New Year! What is your word for 2018?
Have you talked with your children about goals for the New Year? This is a great time to set goals as a family and as individuals. I was challenged to choose a word to represent 2018. For me, the word I chose is MOVE. I need to move my body, move my mind and move LaPerche School towards even greater things! What would your word for 2018 be?
Snow is HERE! Please send in SNOW CLOTHES!
Also, we have quite a few pairs of snow pants in the closet at school, especially smaller pairs. If your child does not have snow pants, please send him or her to school with a note and we will try and find a pair to fit him or her to keep. If your child has outgrown snow pants or boots, feel free to send them to school and we will pass them on to a student who needs them.
Please remind your child that he or she can build snowmen, create forts, slide down mountains and have lots of fun in the snow! Our one rule is NO THROWING SNOW. Please remind your child of this rule, as we do each morning and lunchtime, to help us keep all student safe in the snow!

Zones of Regulation--What's in your toolbox?
The Zones of Regulation is a program designed to help a student (or adult) gain skills in the area of self-regulation which we introduced in October. The ZONES are designed to help students recognize when they are in different zones as well as learn how to use strategies to change zones or stay in the zone they are in.
Red Zone - used to describe heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. A person may be experiencing anger, rage, explosive behavior, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.
Yellow Zone - used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions; however, one has some control when they are in the Yellow Zone. A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.
Green Zone - used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.
Blue Zone - used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings, such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.
Once a student is able to identify their zones they are also able to start thinking about strategies and tools that work for them to help move out of negative zones and into the green zone. Each person is different and will have to experiment to find what works best for them to get back to green. For example, the best strategies might be a quiet space or taking a break for one student and it might be getting active and talking with an adult for another.
Each student (or class depending on grade level) is working to develop a toolbox that is appropriate for him or her. Our goal is for each student to be fully aware of the many options and strategies and then begin to determine which helps him or her the best.
Please continue to use the Zones language at home while you model how your body is feeling and share what strategies work for you to help you return to the green zone. Every time you model out loud, your child is learning how to self-regulate. Feel free to use the resource below to track what's in your toolbox!
Music Drive Us Grant Awarded to LaPerche and McCabe!!
McCabe and LaPerche schools are receiving $10,000 worth of band instruments for their music programs! This music grant is being awarded to McCabe and LaPerche by a New England based, non-profit organization called Music Drives Us that was founded by Ernie Boch, Jr. According to their website and advertisements, they "support innovators who strive to preserve and produce musical opportunities for all communities throughout New England".
The Director of Development and Special Event for Music Drives Us stated that they will be supplying all of the band instruments that Mrs. Barrette requested in the grant including 4 flutes, 4 clarinets, 2 alto saxophones, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a selection of accessories (reeds, valve oil, etc...) through the grant which totaled $10,000. They will also be arranging a visit by Ernie Boch Jr. and the Music Drives Us team to our schools so that they can see our music program in action.
Mrs. Barrette wrote the grant last May in an attempt to obtain a selection of elementary school-owned band instruments for children whose families are having financial challenges. We are all so excited that we will be able to help so many families!
A huge thank you to Mrs. Barrette for all her hard work to continue to move our music program forward!

The LaPerche student directory contains all of the names, emails, and addresses of any LaPerche family who wishes to be included. It is a great resource to use when looking for emails, phone numbers or addresses of classmates.
The PTA sent out a link a few months ago, however, they did not receive many responses so we are resending!
If you would like to sign up to be included in the directory, please click on the link below and add your family!
Deadline to sign up is Wednesday, January 17. Thank you! If you have any questions about the directory, please email Joanna Stepka at laperchepta@gmail.com .
