Principal's Note
Greetings Summit View INC Families and Partners,
If there is one song from the early 2000’s that gets stuck in the head immediately when played it may be “Unwritten” by Natasha Bettingfield. Click here to play it, but be forewarned that you’ll be singing it for some time! Why is this on my mind? Because our goal at SV this year is around writing!
The connection between reading and writing is so strong, research has shown that students’ comprehension of science, social studies, and language arts texts is improved when they write about what they read. Additionally, students’ reading skills and comprehension are improved by learning the skills and processes that go into creating [writing] text and students’ reading comprehension is improved by having them increase how often they produce their own texts.(Read more here in the Writing to Read Report.) Needless to say, the goal that we set last year to increase reading proficiency in all students, will continue this year with support of our students as writers!
Through all the writing, the creative spirit of Summit View carries through and the energy around Arts Integration continues. We are planning a year of visiting artists to share their works, collaborative art projects integrated into the curriculums, and family nights to bring you into our vision!
Lastly, but certainly not least, as a parent, guardian, and/or partner of Summit View you are an important community member! We would love to meet you at one of our PTO meetings and Family Events this year. To save these dates, please visit our calendar here.
2022-2023 is going to be the best year yet and we cannot wait to write this story with you,

Living Life with Leo - Read Aloud Event
Local Author and Mother of former Summit View Eagles visited our students for a read aloud to help us celebrate our theme of “Writing and Telling Your Story!” Diane Nienas, the Author of Living Life with Leo joined us along with the Illustrator, Jayden Ellsworth to share their process of writing, illustrating, and the creative avenues of making the story in your mind become a story for others to enjoy.
Diane Nienas will also be reading aloud her new book at our September Family Night on September 29 from 5:30p-6:30p. Please save the date and plan to attend for read alouds, nature hikes, relaxing hammock swings, and cider by the fire.

PTO NEWS
Time to PLAY!
We are energized for another fun year at RECESS! Our 4th and 5th Grade Playworks Junior Coaches received their training last week and have begun to join Kindergarten through Third Grade lunch recesses. At these recesses, Junior Coaches work in pairs or trios (with Junior Coaches from last year) to facilitate games, assist with conflict resolution, and lead line up cheers. Our younger students LOVE their Junior Coaches and are usually seen following them and joining in their games. Each month we introduce a new Game of the Month to keep things fresh on the playground. However, when students have an idea of a game they would like to play, they can! The two agreements that every and any game must include: there must be a dedicated space on the playground and everyone has the right to join in and play! We are looking forward to welcoming families to an after school recess in the Spring where our Junior Coaches will facilitate some of our student's favorite games!
Parking Lot
Please follow the painted lines in the back lot for student Drop Off and Pick Up. Are there times when the line takes a bit longer, yes and that is expected. However, everyone's patience and waves have been greatly appreciated by all volunteers helping. When the weather begins to change and snow starts to fall, please remember that the lines still exist underneath and the flow will follow just the same. If you have a guest picking up your student(s) remember to explain the Parking Lot flow to them and encourage them to take their time and stay to the right for pick up.
Let's keep this momentum going!

Celebrating Birthdays!
Birthdays are a reason to celebrate individuals. In an effort to remain inclusive of all and to promote healthy habits, we ask that families refrain from sending high sugar snacks as a way to celebrate. Instead, please check with your child's teacher about ways in which they recognize these special days in class!
