Picture Retake Day: Tuesday, October 20 8:45-10:00 a.m.
Picture proofs and picture orders were distributed last week. If you are unhappy with your original picture, your student can participate in picture retake day.
If you purchased pictures and are unhappy with them, please send the original order with your student on Oct. 20th. Mortensen will be set up again outside of door # 8, close to our Michigan Ave parking lot. **Wed., Oct. 28 Early Release - Kids are dismissed at 1:40
Kids may wear school appropriate costumes to school on this day. (no blood, fake weapons, or costume masks) Kids come dressed in their costumes. They will not change at school.

2 children from each homeroom will be recognized for demonstrating perseverance.

LITERACY
The past two weeks we have been reading the book Planet Omar: Accidental Trouble Magnet by Zanib Mian. Students have enjoyed this hilarious book with its cartoon illustrations. We were very excited to join in many other states and countries across the world as this was this years pick for the Global Read Aloud.
Learning Targets:
- I can describe characters in a story and explain how their actions contribute to events.
- I can determine the meaning of phrases that are used in a text.
- I can explain how specific illustrations contribute to what is conveyed bye the words in a text.
WRITING
Learning Targets:
- Writers develop narratives that include real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
- Writers use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING
MATH
Addition with regrouping has been assessed and we are now focusing on subtraction of larger numbers (3 digit numbers) using place value strategies and showing the thinking through the use of expanded form.
Mental math (in our heads-no paper)practice of addition of 2 digit numbers within 100.
Problem Solving
Demonstrating thinking in math journal - learning how to document thinking and give a clear explanation
Social Studies
Identifying the 7 continents and 5 oceans - Kids did a great job on this. Thanks for helping them practice at home.
Moving into AVID two-column notes-practicing putting ideas in our own words and recording the big ideas of an informative written piece.
