Monday Memo
Week of 10/14/19
Good evening LHS family -
I hope you enjoyed your long weekend and had some time to relax and renew!
Thanks to everyone for a very successful open house night. I remained in the main lobby area greeting families and I was also there when they were leaving. There were many satisfied and grateful parents who had very positive experiences meeting with teachers. Thanks to our Culinary students for the cookies and beverages, thanks to our custodians for the table set ups and making sure our school looked extra spiffy, thanks to our AFJROTC cadets for welcoming parents and helping direct folks, and thanks to our counselors who were stationed at informational tables here and at the FA, and lastly thanks to Malinda Pires for all of her assistance helping parents access the portal.
The week ahead is very busy starting with National Honor Society Inductions on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm - all staff are welcome, our students love to see the support of their teachers on this special evening.
PSAT's are Wednesday and you should have all the information you need at this point to help us run a successful implementation. Wednesday evening is our School Site Council meeting at 6:00pm in the HOS conf rm, and the Friends of Lowell High at 7:00pm in the LT.
Mark your calendars for our first schoolhouse breakfast this year hosted by the Main Office Area and Department Chairs on Friday, October 25 starting at 7:15 am in the Faculty cafe.
I hope you like this new Monday Memo format - I'm still learning how to use it and welcome any input.

What the Tech?

Students need your help with Aspen! They do not realize that their Aspen login is not the same as their network login. All freshmen are mailed an Aspen portal letter in August that includes their login ID and temporary password. If a student does not know how to get into their Aspen account, the staff, most likely a teacher, should look in Aspen to see if there is a temporary password listed. In many cases, this is all that is needed to get the student into their account and when he/she logs in for the first time they are prompted to change their password.
All staff can look to see if a student has been into their Aspen account. There are two ways to get to this information: in staff view, go to the student tab, click on the details and you will see it in the second row, third column; in school view, go to the student details page and click on the Aspen tab. If there is no temporary password listed, this means the student has logged into their Aspen account already. If the student does not remember the password, they should use their school email to contact aspenportal@lowell.k12.ma.us and ask for the password to be reset. When it is reset, they will receive an email back with their new temporary password.
In moving together from good to great we all need to help the students get into their Aspen accounts so that they can take responsibility for monitoring their progress and reaching their final goal of graduation.
If you would like me to help you work with your advisory students please enter a help desk request for Technology Training/ITS or email helpdesk@lowell.k12.ma.us and I will make arrangements.
A big welcome from LHS!
A little visit before competing for Miss Universe!
AENI an Ecuadorian org that helps children from Ecuador!
Miss Ecuador visited Lowell High School
As part of the Hispanic Heritage month Cristina Hidalgo, Miss Ecuador visited Lowell High School last Friday. She is here to support AENI an Ecuadorian organization which helps children from Ecuador. Many of these children have cancer or some other serious illnesses. AENI provides medical services and medical equipment to many organizations. The Step team gave a beautiful performance.
Cristina Hidalgo is on her way to participate in the Miss Universe pageant. She is an incredible young lady. She is 22 years old. Thank you to Dr. Vejar for arranging her visit!
Annual College Fair
Lowell High School hosted its 42nd Annual Merrimack Valley College Fair on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 and welcomed students, parents, and community members, alongside over 100 college admission representatives. Students and families also participated in our college planning workshop series, which included the Harvard Club of Merrimack Valley College Outreach Program who outlined strategies and techniques for accessing an Ivy League education; Middlesex Community College and Fitchburg State University reviewed the GPA, high school coursework and SAT testing and SAT optional admission policies, as well as transfer options; and a variety of alumni (including one of our LHS alum, Kylisha Farris, 2000), who attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) who engaged our students and families in conversations about the significance of HBCU’s and their personal/academic experiences. Special recognition goes to Yvette Cheeks for coordinating the speakers at our HBCU workshop and bringing this amazing experience to our students and families. Thanks also to Karyn Cassidy who led and implemented this opportunity for our students and families!
