GUIDANCE INFO
Counselor Connection
Third graders will be introduced to the topic of communication in November. We will be learning about verbal and nonverbal communication, and how to successfully communicate with our friends. Throughout these lessons, we will talk about sharing our feelings through “I-statements” and how to peacefully resolve conflicts with friends.
Students in 4th and 5th grade will be discussing creative problem solving in a variety of situations, but especially in situations involving peer pressure and friends. We will review respecting the perspective of others, demonstrating “I-care” listening, using I-statements, and compromising.
Ponder Parenting
· If your child fails at something merely express your confidence in their ability to handle the consequences. If they behave irresponsibly, merely point out the consequences to themselves and others, and again express your trust that they will learn. As soon as possible give them another opportunity to be appropriately responsible. Do not slip into the downward spiral of blame, shame, and control. It doesn’t work. (Martin, William; The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: A New Interpretation, 1999)
E-mail Miss Sadie if you have thoughts or questions about how to accomplish this task.
School Breaks Food Assistance
Every year around the school break times (Thanksgiving, Winter Break and Spring Break), families from the Sauk Prairie School District have the opportunity to receive food items to help with the financial burden of needing to provide more meals during those break times. This opportunity is similar to the GSPIE snack packs, but includes items to make meals, not just snacks. The district social worker, Susan Baumann-Duren, receives food donations from the community to equally distribute to families in need throughout the district.
We try to fairly distribute these items so the same families don’t receive the assistance at every break time; however, some families do receive the food more than once during the school year. The food items are brought to Grand Avenue and can be picked up by the family, or sent home with the students (this option can be very difficult for the students).
If your family would be interested in receiving meal assistance at the upcoming break, please contact Sadie Sutter at 643-1954 or suttesa@saukpr.k12.wi.us by Tuesday, November 17th.

NURSES CORNER
Head Lice
Lice are small insects about the size of a sesame seed. They are usually light brown but can vary in color. They move quickly and shy away from light, making them difficult to see. It helps to use a magnifying glass and natural light when looking for lice. Nits (eggs) are tiny, yellowish-white oval droplets attached to hair shafts; they do not come off easily and have to be combed out with a special comb or manually removed. Nits can be found throughout the hair, but are most often located at the nape of the neck, behind the ears, and frequently on the top of the head.
When lice are discovered, a head lice treatment is needed before returning to school. It is important to comb through the hair for 7-10 days following a lice treatment. During this time lice can be removed manually or with a special comb. A second treatment may be necessary if nits or live lice are still found. If you have any questions about treatment please contact your child's physician or pharmacist.
Regular screenings at home can help control the spread of head lice. Please check your child weekly throughout the entire school year. It is also important to talk with your child about not sharing items such as combs/brushes, hats, and hair accessories. Please contact Pam Frey, district nurse at 643-5509 if you have any questions regarding head lice.
