HANNA WHELAN – 2ND GRADE
Hi! My name is Hanna Whelan. I am excited to be teaching 2nd grade here at Greenland Elementary School. I worked here 3 years ago as a long-term substitute in 4th grade and I am happy to be back. The last two years I taught 1st grade at Palmyra Elementary School. I live in Oconomowoc with my husband Todd & daughter Kinsley.
CATHY SEIDENGLANZ – 4TH GRADE
It's an honor to be part of the Greenland community! Originally from the north side of Chicago, I went to college at the University of Dayton, married a great guy from Wisconsin, had 2 beautiful daughters (19 & 21), worked in business for almost 20 years and then, followed my dream to teach. I attended Carroll for elementary education and later for my masters. Hillcrest Elementary, in Waukesha, was my home away from home for 9 years teaching 2nd grade. As our youngest left the nest, I felt the winds of change blowing. They led me to Greenland. Since my very first day, I've felt nothing but warmth, welcome, support, and a great love for children and learning. This is definitely where I belong. I believe my job as a teacher to construct a safe and equitable community where children feel valued, empowered, supported, invested, and excited to learn . I am excited to be part of this very special Greenland family.
BECCA ZIETY - 1ST GRADE SUBSTITUTE
My name is Mrs. Ziety and I will be your child’s teacher while Mrs. Baumann is on maternity leave. I thought before we start school together you should know a little bit about me.
I really love to work with kids! I have always been in the field of education. I graduated from UW-Madison with a degree that let me help people with disabilities find employment, maintain/gain independence and live their best life. After college, I ran a large preschool in the Madison area for 15 years. It was great--I worked with preschoolers through 4th graders. I had my own after-school class. Last year, I was a Summit Elementary a lot. I was a long term sub for kindergarten in the fall.
I am married and have two children of my own, they are 10 and 4 years old. As a family, we love to play outside. In the summer you would find us skiing on the lake and in the winter we are on the ski slopes. If I have free time, I LOVE to read and craft.
I’m looking forward to getting to know you all. We will have so much fun learning together.
See you soon!
Mrs. Ziety
SHELLY GROTHAUS – 2ND GRADE
Dear Greenland Elementary School Community,
Excitement about the Upcoming School Year and My Mission
I am excited to return to Greenland Elementary School to teach second grade! The opportunity to work with young learners is a gift. It is my goal to help each student love to learn and to make tremendous progress during the year. My mission is to help transform lives through learning. I have been committed to helping students reach their potential throughout my career.
My Love of Teaching
My love of teaching started when I was twelve-years-old and has continued throughout my life. This is my thirty-second year as an educator and my twentieth year of teaching elementary school. I began my career at Summit Elementary, and later I taught at Greenland Elementary School for six years. I have worked with students in grades
K4-8 and trained teachers locally and nationally. In addition, I was the lead teacher at IMPACT School of Oconomowoc, an innovative school that I co-founded with my husband and ran for ten years. I began an early literacy and math program there, and I fell in love with helping young children develop strong foundations in reading, writing, and math. My varied experiences have helped me to gain a broad understanding of various stages of learning development and growth.
My Education and Interests
I grew up in Oconomowoc, attended Park Lawn Elementary School, Oconomowoc Junior High School, and graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1982. I was the captain of the cross-country team and section leader of the French horn section in the OHS Wind Symphony. After high school, I attended and graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1986 with a Bachelor’s Degree. In 1993, I earned my Master’s Degree from Viterbo College. I am currently working on a degree in the area of reading and am continuing to work as a teacher researcher in the area of mathematics. I love to learn about teaching!
My interests are varied. I play the French horn and have performed with several different groups including the Kettle Moraine Symphony, Beloit Symphony, Southern Lakes Choral Union, Milton Choral Union, Racine Symphony, and Waukesha Area Symphonic Band. I love to read, write, oil paint, and create origami. My husband Rick and I enjoy sailing. (Ask me about our adventure on eight-foot waves on Lake Michigan.) We have a twenty-one-year-old daughter who graduated from OHS with an IB Diploma. She recently headed back to Luther College as a senior. My family and I love traveling. Last summer my daughter and I traveled with a group of service-minded NHI students to the Dominican Republic. We had an amazing time working side by side with the Dominican people! In June, my family visited Peru where we climbed Machu Picchu Mountain and hiked through the Peruvian Amazon
Final Note
I look forward to developing strong partnerships with our amazing families and dedicated staff at Greenland. I am excited to get to know everyone in the Greenland community. Be sure to stop by room 122 so that I can meet you.
Sincerely,
Shelly Grothaus
