The Scoop on 4th Grade
with Miss Lejsner, Mrs. Napoleoni and Mrs. Smith
MARCH 8th, 2019
Dear 4th grade parents,
It was wonderful to see so many of our 4th grade friends at the skate night! Thank you to all of our families who helped make this fundraiser such a success for our school!
Can you believe we are officially in our 3rd trimester? Here are a few questions to ask your child as they reflect on their academic goals.
How have they grown as readers/writers?
In math, what is challenging? What are they proud of as a math student?
What study skills have helped to support their learning?
As our 4th graders continue to grow and learn in our final trimester, our expectations and standards will be continuing to grow too. The students are expected to be responsible students: record homework/assignments accurately and complete them on time.
We appreciate your parent partnerships as we continue to set our goals high!
Curriculum Corner
Reading
In shared reading, we have been using the topic of Pearl Harbor to learn the difference between a firsthand and secondhand accounts. All of our students have been deeply engaged during our discussions on the topic. Our Pearl Harbor resources included books, videos, and interviews. The students practiced strong note-taking skills while learning all about the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.
Writing
We explored different forms of figurative language such as metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and personification. This was fun as we got to explore some very silly sayings! And we created a spring scene outside our classroom door (even though we still have freezing temperatures outside!)
Math
Fractions have been fun and challenging at the same time. We like adding and subtracting them with like denominators. Sometimes converting an improper fraction to a mixed number can challenge our friends, but once they remember the steps of division they usually figure it out. Fractions will continue into Unit 7. Be on the lookout for the new parent note to come home.
Science/Social Studies
We have completed our magnetism and electricity unit in science. This week we started our journey to the Midwest. You should have already seen states and capitals flash cards come home. Please encourage your child to study those early, so it is not so overwhelming the week of the actual test.
