C.U.B (Cougars Upward Bound)
Introductory Newsletter
What is the C.U.B. Program?
CUB is a four-week summer camp focused on literacy. Students in the program receive small group reading instruction daily. They also receive large group instruction in math, review of content through technology integration, and a recreational activity that focuses on fine-tuning social skills. In addition to these daily small group activities, the students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Supporting Data
Last year (2015), 73% of students improved or maintained their reading level (DRA May-Sept.) and 50% of 3rd/4th grade students showed growth in Study Island reading scores (May-end of CUB). In math, 85% of K-2nd grade students showed growth in math, and 67% of 3rd/4th grade students showed growth in Study Island math scores (end of year-end of CUB). This is outstanding when we consider that the target group for the program would normally suffer from “summer slide” (a decrease in skill level over the summer). With the help of CUB, more of our students entered school in August ready for the school year!
What happens in a day at CUB?
Students eat breakfast together upon arrival. They rotate through four stations and then eat lunch. Arrival is 8:45, sessions are 9:00-11:00, and lunch is served at 11:00. Dismissal is at 11:30. All sessions take place at Pine St. Elementary School.
Who can participate?
The program is designed for students who can benefit from instruction in the summer months to maintain or increase skills. The program aims to help those students who typically experience skill loss over the summer and/or those who struggle to meet benchmarks. Note: students who are receiving special education services are not eligible. Ask your child's teacher during your Parent-Teacher Conference if C.U.B. is right for your child. Teachers will have brochures for interested parents.
