December Digital Citizenship
Hello Parents,
If you have an older elementary school student, he or she may have started to use Social Media. It is important that you discuss the ways your child can use social media in the safest way.
Your child can stay safe by following these guidelines:
Don’t post personal information, such as last names, addresses, birthdates, phone numbers or photographs online.
Ask an adult to help with safe usernames, passwords and privacy settings
What goes online stays online. As a general rule, if you wouldn’t say it to your teacher or parents, don’t say it online. Think before you post.
If you receive hurtful or inappropriate messages you have options. Depending on how serious the situation is, you can ignore it, ask the person to stop, unfriend or block the person, or tell your parents, or a teacher. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect.
Parents, read this helpful Family Tip Sheet from Common Sense Media.
Thank you,
Jill Wickham and the Library Media Department
