The Weekly Buzz

This Week 📚
Here's what we focused on this week.
Reading: This week in reading, our text set was about finding your way in a new place. In the stories we read this week, the characters found themselves living in new places where they didn't always fit in. They learned to adapt by connecting to those around them and finding ways to contribute to the community or help their families. We learned about different cultures through these stories
Writing: This week we learned how to write a paragraph. We learned that a paragraph has three important parts: a topic sentence, supporting detail sentences, and a closing sentence. We read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. Then, the students practiced writing a paragraph about what makes them important.
Math: This week in math we worked on solving different types of one-step word problems. We applied the different strategies we have learned for adding and subtracting in order to solve these problems. When solving these problems, it's important to read carefully in order to decide if we need to add or subtract.
Social Studies: This week, we learned about calendars. We learned that calendars show the days in a week and month. We also learned that a calendar can show the whole year. We practiced reading and using different calendars.
📢 Special Request for Next Week!
Next week, we will be decorating the covers of our writer's notebooks. These journals are special places where we will keep all of our ideas for writing this year. To make them more personal, students will have the opportunity to decorate the cover. If your child would like, they can bring pictures, stickers, or other items from home to decorate their covers. Bringing these items from home is optional. Please send these items to school by next Friday, September 22 in an envelope or baggie with your child's name.
📅 Parent-Teacher Conferences Information
Please look for information about parent-teacher conferences next week! Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 12 and Wednesday, October 25.
🔢 Student PINs
This week your child should have brought home a notecard with their 5 digit PIN. This is their PIN for breakfast/lunch. It is also the 5 digit number that is part of their password for their Chromebook/Google password. Please help your child memorize this 5 digit PIN. It will help make the breakfast/lunch lines run more smoothly, and it will make logging into our Chromebooks much easier. Thank you for your help!

📌 Reminders
Nightly Homework
Each night your child should read for at least 10 minutes and practice math facts for at least 5 minutes. A great way to practice math facts is using XtraMath.
In second grade, we work on mastering our basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-18 so they become automatic. Practicing facts for a few minutes every night will help us reach this goal! If you need flashcards, here are some that you can print and use at home.
Dismissal
Remember to use the PikMyKid app/website for any dismissal changes. I will be checking this each afternoon as verification for how each child will go home. Please make all changes before 2:45 PM.
