Return to School Update ~ August 10, 2020
Dear Brookhaven Families,
Happy August! I hope this letter finds you well and having had some time to relax and recharge your batteries after an unprecedented Spring 2020 and end to the school year. I miss our students, families and staff and look forward to reconnecting again soon as we return to school, in a Remote Learning format, on Tuesday, September 1st.
Our district has been working diligently over the summer to create our Return to School Plan as shared on August 6th. If you have not yet, please take some time to read through this important document as it contains important information for our Remote Learning Plan. In this document are schedules for what your student's day will look like during our remote learning period.
As we get closer to September 1st, and once class placements have been finalized, teachers will share their specific class schedules. For now, here are some important items to know:
- Our teachers and staff are eager to see your student(s), to help them connect with each other, and to provide the best social, emotional, and academic support we can while learning online.
- Students will not be expected to be on Zoom for the entirety of 7:50 am - 1:10 pm. Teachers will be providing daily live instruction for each subject area according to grade level specific schedules as well as small group support during independent work times. Those schedules will be shared by teachers as we get closer to the first day of school.
- Recess and lunch will be at the same time for all grades kindergarten through 6th grade.
- In addition to independent learning and planning done over the summer, teachers are taking advantage of professional development training through the district to enhance the online teaching and learning experience for our students.
- PK and Kindergarten Assessments have been cancelled for the month of August.
Brookhaven's office will be open for business beginning Wednesday, August 12, during regular office hours. In an effort to help keep both our office staff and families safe and healthy, we will be asking parents to make an appointment before coming to the office for any reason. If you need to drop off registration and enrollment documents, please call for an appointment. Fifteen minute appointments will be available from 8:00 am - 12:00 pm and from 1:00-3:00 pm. Please call 714) 986-7110 ext. 40002 to schedule an appointment. Masks will be required for anyone entering the office building. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure students are registered for school while keeping everyone safe.
I will continue to keep families updated via email as we get closer to the start of school. As we have learned over the past five months, things are ever-changing and evolving. Our students, staff and community health is our top priority and when we work together, give grace and trust one another, I am confident that we will make the best of this time for everyone! As I have stated, please continue to know that we miss being together in person and are excited to reconnect again virtually when school resumes. I will send more information next week regarding the opening of school, Back to School Night and more so that you can feel and be as prepared as possible for the 2020-2021 school year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lucas
