Winter Break Message
Dear Eagle Academy Families
During this holiday season of celebration, giving, and family gatherings, I am reminded of the following quote from the Dalai Lama: “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.” We are very fortunate that at EACS our teachers and staff show love and compassion to our students’ lives every day.
During Winter Break, we would like to encourage you to continue to read with your child for 20 minutes or more each day. Reading is such a powerful tool for building a child’s mind and reading together builds even stronger familial bonds.
Have a safe and joyful holiday season with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you all when we return to school on January 6th, 2020
Yours Truly,
Principal Carroll & Staff of Eagle Academy

CALLING ALL DADS
Eagle Academy Charter School values and appreciates the contributions and support we receive from all of our amazing stakeholders. We would not be the school that we are without your support. We would like to send out a special invitation to our dads to come spend some time volunteering so that our boys can have more opportunities to see and interact with men in the school environment. We believe that your presence in the building will be of great benefit in helping to build character in our young men.
Below is a list of opportunities that we hope some of our dads will take advantage of. We are always open to your suggestions on how we can work together to create an environment that you feel comfortable spending time in.

Dear EACS Parents, Guardians, and Staff:
A student who attends a local High School was diagnosed with pertussis this week, which is more commonly known as whooping cough.
Pertussis is a contagious respiratory infection, and is called whooping cough because of the characteristic sound of the cough it causes. The illness usually begins with a runny nose and mild cough that last about a week. If your child has or develops symptoms of pertussis, please see your health care provider, and notify the school nurse. Children who become ill with pertussis need to be treated and to stay home for the 5 days of treatment.
Most elementary school children who have completed their childhood DTaP vaccination are initially protected against pertussis. However, this protection wanes over time and nearing 6th-grade children usually receive their booster Tdap. The best means of stopping the spread of pertussis is to make sure you and your children are up-to-date with DTaP and/or Tdap vaccinations.
If you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to call.

The Boston Tea Party
On December 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor.
The midnight raid, popularly known as the “Boston Tea Party,” was in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773, a bill designed to save the faltering East India Company by greatly lowering its tea tax and granting it a virtual monopoly on the American tea trade. The low tax allowed the East India Company to undercut even tea smuggled into America by Dutch traders, and many colonists viewed the act as another example of taxation tyranny.
First airplane flies
On December 17 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft. Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight.
U.S. approves end to internment of Japanese Americans
On December 17, 1944, U.S. Major General Henry C. Pratt issues Public Proclamation No. 21, declaring that, effective January 2, 1945, Japanese American “evacuees” from the West Coast could return to their homes.
During the course of World War II, 10 Americans were convicted of spying for Japan, but not one of them was of Japanese ancestry. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill to recompense each surviving internee with a tax-free check for $20,000 and an apology from the U.S. government.
Mayflower lands at Plymouth Harbor
On December 18, 1620, the British ship Mayflower landed at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, and its passengers prepared to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony.
The famous Mayflower story began in 1606, when a group of reform-minded Puritans in Nottinghamshire, England, founded their own church, separate from the state-sanctioned Church of England. Accused of treason, they were forced to leave the country and settle in the more tolerant Netherlands. After 12 years of struggling to adapt and make a decent living, the group sought financial backing from some London merchants to set up a colony in America. On September 6, 1620, 102 passengers–dubbed Pilgrims by William Bradford, a passenger who would become the first governor of Plymouth Colony–crowded on the Mayflower to begin the long, hard journey to a new life in the New World.
