A Few Words from the Principal
Second semester brings with it looking forward to next year. I know some of you are thinking it is only January 6, but 8th graders will begin their course selection process for 9th grade in a few short weeks. Our 7th and 6th graders will complete their course selections in February/ March. If you have not had the opportunity to talk with your student about courses that they want to explore next year, the time is quickly approaching for those decisions to be made. Students will be participating in activities in their classes to help them make these choices. Look for more information soon coming from the counselors.
I hope everyone has a wonderful second semester.
7th Graders thoughtfully starting 2023!
Career Exploration Day
MTMS will have a career exploration day on the morning of March 10. We need your help to make this day a success.
Thank you for supporting our scholars by completing this form by Friday, January 13. If you have questions or need additional information please reach out to Principal Smith at jrsmith@usd232.org.
From the Counselors
Returning from winter break can be a difficult transition for students. Here are a few tips on how to help your child be successful.
- Set aside time each week to spend with your child. Show interest in what your child enjoys.
- Get to know your child’s friends and parents and stay connected.
- Designate a quiet location for studying, away from distractions and technology.
- Help your child to structure homework time so that it is getting done.
- Set the expectation that school attendance is important (unless your child is ill).
- Encourage healthy habits including enough sleep and nutritious foods.
- Encourage involvement in school activities.
- Talk to your child about the importance of making good choices and decisions.
- Encourage independent problem solving.
- Remember to give positive feedback and encouragement to your child on a regular basis.
From StuCo
StuCo is hosting a Dash for Cash competition to raise money for Children's Mercy Hospital. From January 9th through the 20th, students can enter their names for $1 during lunch for a chance to run for their grade and win money. Have fun and help a great cause by participating!

From the Nurse
Illness
- If you have a child who is sick, we ask for your support by keeping them at home. Students and staff must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication, and free of vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
· If your student is diagnosed with Influenza (“the Flu”) or with COVID, they must remain at home for 5 days from the onset of illness, with return on day 6.
- If you have questions about your student’s health, please contact your school nurse. Additional information regarding health and wellness is available on the district website.
- Remind your child of important preventative measures for any illness, such as coughing into the sleeve, frequently washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and getting plenty of rest and fluids.
