April 2017
Dear BCSSSD Community,
I look forward each year to the Spring. It is a season that indicates a shift from the cold and nasty weather to warm temperatures, sun, longer days and a sense of optimism. It is also a season that ushers in the spring flowers and buds on the trees, not to mention allergies. Spring is also a reminder of the great things that are upon us in the Special Services School District. In addition to the seventy-degree weather this week, we celebrate Autism Awareness Month. Last week, we celebrated Read Across America Day in our elementary school. This week, we honored three of our students at the Annual New Jersey Principal and Supervisor Academic Awards Dinner for the top sophomore, junior and senior. Within the last two weeks, we had over 75 exhibitors and over 150 attendees at our Resource Fair and Open House. This past Monday, we had our first ever Prom Fashion Show in preparation for our Prom in May.
At the end of the month, we look forward to the annual Reunion Dance. In this Spring newsletter, there is so much more to read about that is happening in the district. That is why I like the Spring. We have so much to celebrate and it all begins with all of our staff, parents, and students who make the district a special place to be, work and learn. Happy Spring!

Letter from BCSSSD Educational Foundation President
Dear BCSSSD Community,
I hope you had the opportunity to attend BCSSSD's Resource Fair and Open House on the Westampton Campus on March 30th. Most of the attendees who approached our table were parents of children who have benefited from our Respite Program. Families encouraged us to continue the program that provides them with a day of freedom. They were also impressed with the "Functional Living Center" (FLC), which our Foundation has assisted in funding.
Please save the date for our annual Golf Outing on June 26, 2017 at the Medford Lakes Country Club.

March Art on Display
Ms. Grohe's BCSSSD Westampton students explored the following art forms:
Picasso Pop Art
In looking at Pablo Picasso’s artwork, exploratory students from Koch and Cassel’s classes analyze how Cubists artists show multiple views of the subject in one artwork as well as challenge conventional art rules such as linear perspective. In this lesson, students explore sculpture, portrait drawing, abstraction, recycled materials, perspective, pattern, and emphasis. This project is a big hit every marking period as students love to crush their soda cans into unique shapes and perspective, then explore painting techniques using acrylic paint.
High School Fine Art
High school students taking Integrated Fine Arts are studying the elements of art and principles of design, color theory, art criticism, art history, and safety in the art room. This display is a collection of different mediums and movements students have been studying this past marking period. (Right to left) The study of Illuminated Manuscripts introduced students to Medieval lettering and the repousse technique, Optical Illusion Art allowed students to push the boundaries of perspective and depth, and the sunrise/sunset paintings explored watercolors, value, and mixed media painting. Each lesson takes an in-depth look at an artist, movement, and new technique to build on and expand students creativity.
Art is on display in the district central office lobby the month of April.
