Principal's Message
It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the school year! Students have been working hard over the last four months on their reading, writing, and math skills, learning about topics in social studies and science, and building community with their classmates and our entire school. On Friday, February 9, students will bring home their first semester report card. Teachers will record marks and comments about your student’s progress at this point in the school year. As you may have noticed, this is the first report card this year. Our district shifted elementary communication to four times each year: two conferences and two report cards. This is consistent with the practice at middle school and high school where there are also four reporting periods.
This is also the time of year when we start thinking forward to next year. We are now accepting registration for new Kindergarteners who will start in September 2018. Please help spread the word to any neighbors in our attendance area who may not have anyone attending Terra Linda this year. Students must be five years of age on or before September 1st, per state statute, and live within the attendance boundary of our school. We invite you to register early as this assists us in confirming enrollment for staffing purposes. Please present a birth certificate, proof of residence, and immunization records that the office may copy for your student’s enrollment file. Kindergarten Orientation will be on Thursday, April 12. Sign-in begins at 6:00 pm and the presentation begins at 6:30 pm in our Cafeteria.
We are excited to share that we have access to a preschool for students in the Terra Linda attendance area who will start Kindergarten in the fall of 2018. This program begins in February and is for children who are not currently enrolled in a preschool program. Please contact me at Terra Linda if you would like more information for your child. And please pass this on to friends or neighbors who might be interested. What a great way to get prepared for Kindergarten!
We are looking forward to the second half of our school year and watching our students grow even more!
Kind Regards,
Christy
New Secretary
Please welcome Liz Sarles as our new Secretary in the front office. Liz has been our Technology instructional assistant for the past three years. We are thrilled she is transitioning to this new role!
Hispanic Parent Night
Our next Hispanic Parent Night is on Wednesday, January 31 from 6:30-8:00 pm. Rick Puente, Director of Public Safety, will share strategies and ideas for how Latino parents can feel connected with schools and be involved in their children's education. We will have pizza and fruit for all families who attend. Childcare will be available in the gym. Please know the entire event is presented in Spanish.
Valentine's Celebration Reminders
On Wednesday, February 14, Valentine’s Day parties are planned for each classroom. Students are not required to bring Valentine’s cards to school, but if your student is planning to bring cards, please keep in mind that they must bring one for each student in the class. We continue to try to support students and families in making healthy choices. If you plan to include a treat with each card, please try to minimize candy and sweets. You might consider non-food options such as stickers, erasers, or pencils.
Too Sick for School?
Here are some guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
Fever - Keep your student home with fever greater than 100.5° F; student may return when fever-free for 24 hours (WITHOUT use of fever-reducing medicine).
Vomiting/Diarrhea - Keep your student home with any unexplained vomiting episode.
Diarrhea equals three or more unexplained episodes of watery or loose stools in 24 hours OR sudden onset of loose stools. May return 24 hours after last episode.
Cough - Serious, sustained coughing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.
Rash - Any new rash accompanied by a fever. May return after rash goes away or clearance given by a healthcare provider.
Skin Lesions/Sores - Drainage from a sore that cannot be contained within a bandage OR sores are increasing in size OR new sores are developing day-to-day.
Other - Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation in usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.
BSD Clothes Closet Socks & Underwear Drive
The PTC is sponsoring a clothing drive in support of the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet. Please bring new socks and/or underwear and place them in the lobby bins by Wednesday, January 31. There’s currently a high demand for larger sizes that fit ages 13-18.
The BSD Clothes Closet is a volunteer service organization that provides free clothing for children, in need, in grades K-12, who reside in the District attendance area. It is staffed by Beaverton School District parent group volunteers. Students can find school-type clothing such as jeans, t-shirts, polo shirts, sweatshirts, warm coats, socks and underwear free of charge.
Turn Your Key - Be Idle Free
Idling vehicles contribute to air pollution and emit air toxins, which are pollutants known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects. Monitoring at schools has shown elevated levels of benzene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other air toxics during the afternoon hour coinciding with parents picking up their children.
Children’s lungs are still developing, and when they are exposed to elevated levels of these pollutants, children have an increased risk of developing asthma, respiratory problems and other adverse health effects. Limiting a vehicle’s idling time can dramatically reduce these pollutants and children’s exposure to them.
In the Beaverton School District, the School Board recognizes that a safe and health school environment is important in contributing to the health of students and adults. Clean air is essential to creating a healthy learning environment for students to participate in the educational process.
Unnecessary vehicle idling emits pollutants, wastes fuel and wastes financial resources. Therefore, a goal of the Board is to eliminate unnecessary idling by all District vehicles, and to establish a way to minimize the practice in all vehicles on District property (Board Policy EBAD).
As parents, you can do your part to reduce students’ exposure to air toxins emitted in the exhaust of idling vehicles by:
Turning off your engine when waiting for students to be picked up
Turning off your engine when you arrive to school and when you expect to be parked for more than 5 minutes
If idling is necessary for temperature control, please restrict it to no more than five (5) minutes
We encourage you to eliminate unnecessary idling, not only at our schools but anywhere you are waiting for more than 30 seconds. This simple change will improve the air our children breathe, as well as the air quality in our neighborhoods.
