2017-2018 COURSE SELECTIONS
Welcome to Scheduling 2017-2018! I want to communicate to you some of the important dates to make scheduling for the 2017-2018 school year run smoothly. Before I do, I would urge all of you to read the Program of Studies which can be found on our homepage, especially the first 17 pages as they contain a tremendous amount of helpful information. Also, in the list of classes, you will find our new courses highlighted in RED.
Now on to the nuts and bolts of scheduling:
- The deadline for choosing elective courses is January 24th!
- Scheduling of elective courses can now be done online through either the Student or Parent Portal.
- After elective courses are chosen, each student will meet with his/her Guidance Counselor for a one-on-one scheduling meeting. During this meeting, the counselor will review the graduation requirements and attend to any student scheduling issues. On the portal, you will see that the academic course recommendations that have been made by your child’s current teacher.
- If you and your child wish to change any of the academic recommendations and take a higher level course, a Scheduling Waiver Form must be completed and submitted to Mrs. Kitty Newman, Guidance Secretary. The deadline for waiver forms is March 29, 2017. There are no exceptions for late waivers.
- Our schedule change calendar is found on Page 12 of the Program of Studies. If your child is struggling, then he/she can move if there is room in the lower level course; however, his/her schedule might be altered due to course meeting times. We want students to reach for the stars; however, we still want them to be kids and enjoy their time at DHS! A balance between school work and social experiences is vital.
- Individual counselor meetings will conclude by the middle of March; therefore, if your child does not get a pass from guidance in the next few weeks, do not despair. Also, our classified students will have their scheduling meetings during their annual IEP review during the month of February.
- After the meetings are concluded, all classes are “set in stone” until the scheduling process is done here at the high school. My goal is to have finalized schedules in your child’s hand in early June. At that time, level changes will be permitted until July 31st. Our Guidance office will be staffed throughout the month of July should you need assistance. It is not necessary to speak with your child’s specific counselor for course changes.
Congrats Teacher-of-the-Year
Linda Mason has been an inspiration to countless students. She has superior intelligence and a matchless compassion. You will not find a staff member who treats their students with as much love, kindness, and concern. She is the one that students know they can to go for anything. She is a gifted educator and a valued member of the staff. The students of Delran, past and present, often name her as one of “those teachers” that had a major impact on their lives. Sometimes, it was sparking a passion or an interest in the sciences. And sometimes, it was as simple as being the teacher who really cared about their well-being. All of this speaks volumes about why there is no better candidate for this honor.
Students of the Month
Jason was nominated by Mr. Shaun DeLoche for his leadership responsibility, school spirit, good work ethic and diligence. Mr. DeLoche stated that Jason took the initiative to create a new school store logo that will be painted on the front wall of the store. He also created a series of marketing and advertising displays to help increase knowledge of the store and all the merchandise that is available. Mr. DeLoche is very proud that Jason is creating a better store for DHS because of his excellent work ethic and leadership skills.
Marcos Lacerda was nominated by Mrs. Cindy Mignogna for his character, respect, leadership responsibility, good work ethic, diligence and citizenship! Mrs. Mignogna stated that Marcos unselfishly gives his time to help new portuguese speaking students communicate with teachers and the school nurse. He helps Mrs. Mignogna explain mandated physical exams, immunizations and other needed medical documents. Marcos helps these non-English speaking families arrange doctor appointments and follow-up visits. He is a leader among his peers and exemplifies good character and citizenship. Most importantly, he is a positive role model and always has a smile on his face.
Congratulations and thank you Jason and Marcos for a job well done!
Alumni Walk
Delran High School is proud to reintroduce the, ”DHS Alumni Walk.” The project is designed to provide the graduating seniors and DHS Alumni the opportunity to make their legacy a permanent piece of the landscape of Delran High School. This is the third year of the project, and we are hopeful to pave our way past the ticket booth this year. The project will allow members of the Delran High School family to congratulate, memorialize, and archive their relationships, memories, and friendships fostered here at DHS. Please consider buying a brick and making your legacy a permanent piece of DHS’s path to success. Please submit the order form with your payment to Mr. Brian Stolarick, Assistant Principal. Checks must be made payable to DHS Special Funds.

Students Can Connect to Free SAT Practice
CollegeBoard partnered with Khan Academy® to create Official SAT Practice for all students for free! Last month, more than four million students received their results from the October 2016 PSAT/NMSQT®. Official SAT Practice uses those results to put together personalized SAT® practice plans for each student. All they have to do is create and connect their Khan Academy and College Board accounts. It's quick, it's easy, and it will keep students on track for college. As an added bonus for students to link their accounts, we're donating laptops to public libraries in the district with the highest percentage of 2016 PSAT/NMSQT test takers who connect their accounts between October 1, 2016 and January 18, 2017, and in the three districts with the highest percentage who connect accounts any time on January 18th. See the flyer and quotes from students about this opportunity.
