Students have been working in partnership with artists from Art Reach San Diego to design this beautiful new addition to our school. SSC/SGT Meeting

All parents are invited to attend the School Site Committee (SSC) meeting. The SSC is a shared decision-making body composed of parents, staff, and students. SPRING DANCE for Middle school

- Tickets are $2, pay at the door (no pre-sale)
- Attendees will get community service hours just for attending!

- Non-MEA guests are allowed, as long as they are in grades 6-8 and have the permission form completed by their school

This permission form is required for each student to attend the dance. This form is also available in the front office. It can be turned in to the office ahead of time, or turned in at the door.

"Larger Than Life" Art Show

Everyone is invited to this special event, showcasing student artwork from grades K-12. The theme of this art show is "Larger Than Life." Bring your friends and family!
WANTED: STUDENT ARTWORK
Artwork from ALL students is welcome (not just from Ms. Flo's art students). We want to see YOUR creativity on display!
Students, to prepare your work for display, please click this link for the art submission form. Then bring the form and your artwork to Mrs. Flo in room 10. Submissions need to be turned in by this Friday, April 26, and each student can submit up to 2 pieces of artwork.

Senior Prom at Serra High School
Saturday, June 1 / 7:00-10:00pm / Manchester Grand Hyatt
MEA seniors are invited to attend the Senior Prom with Serra High School. The theme is "Las Vegas" and the dance will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. If you are interested in going, here are the details.
- You must be a Senior to go, unless a Senior is taking you, then you can be any grade in High School.
- Permission slips are now available in our front office.
- Tickets can be purchased in our front office starting April 29.
- You must turn in your permission slip and money at the same time. Please see the permission slips for more details and rules.
- Ticket prices are $70 (until 5/10), $80 (from 5/13-5/24) and $90 (from 5/27-5/30).
**** ANNOUNCEMENTS ****
May schedule for testing
State and AP testing is coming soon! Please be sure to carefully review the special testing calendar for May that can be found here. Different grade levels test at different times and some grade levels have more tests than others. Please note that regular studygroup classes are cancelled when students are testing. Life skills and sexual education classes are also taking place for 8th, 9th, and 10th graders in May and we highly encourage you to have your students attend. Please see your child’s supervising teacher with questions regarding the May schedule.
Empty Baskets?
If you were a winner in the silent auction, feel free to return empty baskets that you do not wish to keep to the front office so we can repurpose them for the auction next year. Thank you for your consideration.

Exploring Educational Excellence

Choosing Classes for 2019-20
If you (or your student) are currently in grades 8-11 you should have already had an appointment with Mr. Zappala where you discussed courses for next year and graduation and college entrance requirements. If you have not done that, please email him at rzappala@sandi.net to set up a time to meet. If you do not meet with Mr. Zappala your schedule for next year will be created for you without your input based on graduation requirements.

**** STUDENT SPOTLIGHT ****
As Mt. Everest Academy offers students the “flexibility to pursue your passion,” our school has a wealth of students that are pursuing their passions while meeting their educational goals. The "Student Spotlight" is a way to share some of the exciting endeavors our students are involved in with the rest of our school, and a way for students to learn about other students with similar interests.

Sophie C. in the Virigina Waring International Piano Competition
Sophie C., grade 4, was selected after a preliminary audition round to the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition 2019, a highly competitive event. She was the youngest contestant (9 yrs) in the Junior division (12 years and under) and was one of the 6 Semi-Finalists out of 17 initial players, earning her an Honorable Mention.
However, even if it was a defeat, she is looking forward to competing again. After a preliminary screening, Sophie just got admitted as one of the 10 top players in her division to the Steinway Competition in Beverly Hills as well as the Kaufman International Piano Competition in New York in June, where she was selected out of 208 applicants, to compete.
In the pictures below, Sophie is practicing on site and then holding the Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition.

2019 City Nature Challenge
Crowdsource for science!
The City Nature Challenge, which takes place from April 26-29, 2019, is a worldwide competition to see which city can make the most observations of their local plants and animals over a 4-day period. The Natural History Museum (The Nat) is spearheading our local effort. The goal is to document as many species as possible via your smartphone.
Participating can be as easy as 1-2-3:
1. Find wild plants and animals
2. Take photos
3. Share your findings via the iNaturalist app
World Meningitis Day 2019
April 24, 2019 is World Meningitis Day. This observance is a reminder about the seriousness of meningococcal disease and the importance of immunization to protect against some of its most common types.
Learn more from the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO). They are dedicated to preventing meningitis globally by ensuring families worldwide have access to early diagnosis, preventative measures and quick treatment.
Biodiversity & Neurology Research Program
UC San Diego Extension, in partnership with The Boz Institute and Biocom Institute, is offering students the opportunity to get first hand research experience through their Biodiversity & Neurology Research Program.
This 3-week spring program allows high school students to gain research experience through their participation in a research team that will focus on one of two research projects: Ecological Biodiversity/Molecular Phylogenetics and Fruit Fly Neurobiology. Students will earn three (3) college-prep units upon completion of this program.

Future Boss Entrepreneurship Training & Competition
FOR 11th GRADERS
Have an idea and want to take it to the next level? Here is your opportunity to learn how to market your idea. The 8th annual FutureBoss entrepreneurship training platform & competition for is open to current rising seniors throughout San Diego County!
This year it will be held during June 17-20 at the University of San Diego where participants will get trained for free by college faculty and industry leaders on how to prepare a business presentation that can be given to potential investors. This will then culminate in a competition for at least $2,000 in scholarship awards. Applications are due May 17.
Last year, participants from over 23 schools throughout San Diego County participated and were awarded thousands of dollars in scholarship awards.
