Welcome to the Crosby Scholars Sophomore Program!
Welcome to the Crosby Scholars High School Program! Sophomore year is the time when you're no longer the newbie of the school and have a better grasp of high school expectations. As a sophomore, you should continue to explore extra-curricular activities you may be interested in, refine your time management and study skills, and most importantly, focus on doing your best in the classroom. Crosby Scholars is here to alleviate any stresses you might face by keeping you informed and preparing you for what lies ahead. However, it is up to you to utilize these resources and always perform to your highest potential.
DestinationCollege2020, is published quarterly to keep you informed of activities, deadlines, and program opportunities. It is your responsibility to know deadlines and program requirements, so read your newsletter and log in to your Crosby Scholars student portal regularly to find out all the latest information.

Practice Tests: preparation is the key to success
PSAT/NMSQT test date is October 11, 2017
PSAT 10 test date is in Spring 2018
The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 are the same test, offered at different times of year. They are both great practice for the SAT because they test the same skills and knowledge as the SAT--in a way that makes sense for your grade level. They both provide score reports you can use to personalize your Khan Academy SAT practice. These score reports also list which AP courses you should check out. For more information visit collegeboard.com/psat.
PreACT test date is November 2, 2017
Each year nearly three million high school juniors and seniors take the ACT to assess their college and career readiness. PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience within a shorter test window on all four ACT test subjects: English, math, reading, and science. The new PreACT provides you with information that can help you select the right high school courses, think about ways to target areas for improvement, and even begin discussions about college and career. You also may choose to have your information shared with colleges and scholarship agencies when you take PreACT, which can help you get discovered for college recruitment and scholarship opportunities. For more information visit act.org/preact.
Read every day. Read at least 30 minutes every day, in addition to studying and doing homework. This habit will pay off when you take tests with timed reading sections, like college admission tests. (source: bigfuture.org)
Contact your school counselor to inquire about test dates, fees, and registering for these tests.
It's NOT Too Early to Start Speaking with College Reps!
The WS/FCS System, along with the Carolina Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (CACRAO), sponsors a college fair each fall called the Post-Secondary Opportunities Session (PSOS). Although you have until early October of your senior year to fulfill this requirement, you may fulfill this requirement as a sophomore!
Fulfill this requirement early! Attend the 2017 college fair on Monday, October 2, 2017, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the Benton Convention Center in downtown, Winston-Salem AND submit your college fair form to verify your presence. Look for the Crosby Scholars table as you enter and exit the fair! You are not required to stay for three hours; you will not need to pre-register to attend.
Approximately 125 colleges/universities are represented at this fair. Each college will have its own table and will be placed in alphabetical order. To help scholars navigate the college fair, a list of colleges and their table number is provided by the WS/FCS system and is available upon entering the fair. Additionally, the list is posted on the Crosby Scholars Program website approximately one week prior to the fair. Parking is available in the parking deck. Be prepared to pay for parking. Several hundred students will attend this fair, so please allow extra time to enter and exit the parking deck. PSOS offers students the opportunity to interact with admission reps from North Carolina colleges as well as out-of-state colleges.
You may read more about the college fair/college visit requirement in your Crosby Scholars student portal. Click here to view and print the sophomore college fair form. You may submit the form at the Crosby Scholars table prior to exiting the college fair.
