A Message from the Administration
The Importance of Feeling Valued
by Sarah Crum, Director of Student Services
The other day, a student walked into my office with a piece of colored paper. He placed it on my desk with a smile, but didn’t say anything. I picked it up and read his personalized thank you note. He had interviewed me earlier in the week for a school assignment. I certainly had enjoyed participating in the interview conversation, but I was thrilled to receive the thank you note. While this wasn’t written on the paper, what the thank you note said to me was, “You matter: what you do here is valued and your interactions with others mean something.” It seems to me that this is really what we are all looking for. We want to know that we matter.
I began this job in July, in what I was told were the quiet days of summer. With all the construction happening and the bustle of cleaning and preparing the schools for the start of the school year, it was anything but quiet. But now with everyone back in the buildings, there is a clear sense of purpose and a sense of community. The classrooms have been meticulously organized, each teacher personalizing items for the individual students who would be arriving every day. Walls are now filled with student portraits, hopes and dreams, student superpowers. Teams have engaged in community building field trips and routines have been established. We spend a lot of time ensuring students feel welcome and wanted when we prepare for the first day and the first few weeks of school. Veteran educator, James Comer, states that, “No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.” As I walk around the hallways and into the classrooms at Allen Brook and Williston Central, it is apparent how much the faculty and staff prioritize making this message very clear in how they take care of their students and each other.
Now that we have settled in to our routines and accepted the academic and social challenges that await us, that message remains at the forefront of all we do: every day that you walk into our school, you matter. That thank you note will stay on my wall all year.

“Cans for a Cause” Food Sculpture Contest at ABS
Allen Brook School has registered to take part in the Williston Community Food Shelf food sculpture contest. The event takes place at the Williston Masonic Lodge on Friday, October 19th - Sunday, October 21st. The Students brainstormed possible sculptures and by a very wide margin a school bus was selected!
We will be collecting canned goods with a primarily yellow wrapper. Examples of this are Pastene ground tomatoes and Del Monte sliced peaches, any size. Other products are welcome as well, think yellow!
You can also send money or a check (made out to Willison Schools) in a clearly marked envelope, Cans for a Cause or Williston Food Shelf, and drop it off in the front office. We’ll do the shopping for you!
Check out Williston Schools Makerspace on Facebook for updates on the sculpture creation and we hope you can attend the event and check out our sculpture as well as all the others from our community.
