The Scoop on 4th Grade
with Miss Lejsner, Mrs. Napoleoni, & Mrs. Smith
FEBRUARY 1st, 2019
Dear 4th grade parents,
If at all possible, please incorporate keyboarding skills into your child's computer time at home. We recommend typing up sentences using their WTW words, typing a story, or using one of the many free typing programs. Here are a few:

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. We truly appreciate your partnership in your child's education.
Curriculum Corner
Reading
These past two weeks in reading have been very busy! We have continued to read different types of traditional literature and discuss the differences between them. The students have now read fables, folktales, tall tales, and myths. Last week we used the tall tale Stormalong to talk about the point of view a story is written from. The students then used this new knowledge to rewrite a part of the story by changing the point of view. We also will be discussing the story elements when reading the myth Hercules' Quest. Based on the amount of participation and discussion, traditional literature seems to be a popular genre among our class.
Writing
The students are continuing to write a variety of pieces and modes during writing workshop. A highlight of writing workshop is always when they can share either a portion of their written work with a partner or the entire piece with the whole class. As classmates we continue to give each other challenges and celebrations to help them grow as writers!
Math
Woo hoo! We finished math journal one! The students have been "traveling great lengths" to learn all about measurement. This unit started with conversion charts for metric units of measurement in length, volume, and mass. Then the students learned all of the customary measurement conversions for length, weight and volume. We concluded with perimeter and area of figures. This unit also contains story problems involving elapsed time. Please encourage your child to figure out the amount of time they spend doing daily activities. Such as time spent: going to school, reading per week, going to practice, etc. Also problems involving a start or end time..."you can go to your friend's house for 2 hours. If I drop you off at a quarter past 3, what time will I need to pick you up?" We will be testing over this unit next week.
Science/Social Studies
We have covered a lot of territory already in the Southeast region of the United States. A crowd favorite was studying all about space at Cape Canaveral! We now have another reason to go to Florida, besides just warmer weather! Keep practicing your states and capitals, as well as state locations. We will be testing next week.
