SWHS Opens Clothes Closet
Southwestern Junior - Senior High School is asking for your support in filling a need within the Spartan community. The school is creating an onsite clothing closet, SWHS Clothes Closet, to help students enrolled in seventh through twelfth grade in need of clothes. Southwestern has noted a growing need for their students to have access to clothes in addition to offering food assistance.
To battle food insecurity, Southwestern Junior - Senior High School has long supported families in need by housing the Spartan Cupboard, an onsite food pantry, and offering take home bags of food each week to enrolled students and their families. Providing students at Southwestern with access to free clothing is just another way that the school and community supports its students.
SWHS is asking for donations of gently used or new clothing and/or monetary donations to begin distributing items to students in need. SWHS Clothes Closet items most urgently needed include the following: new packages of socks, new packages of undergarments, zip-up hooded sweatshirts in a variety of sizes, camisoles or tank tops, large size sweatshirts, short and long sleeve t-shirts in a variety of sizes, and jeans in a variety of sizes. Your support can make a difference in the lives of SWHS students. Donations can be dropped off in the office at Southwestern Junior - Senior High School. Please let staff know the donation is for the SWHS Clothes Closet. Questions? Contact Lindsay Chase at (317) 729-5347 or through email at lchase@swshelby.k12.in.us
Spartan Journalists' Interviews
Dylan Phelps Interviews Mrs. Meyer
Q: What exactly is Fall Harvest Day?
A: "Fall Harvest Day is a time that we use to celebrate agriculture and to show things to the elementary students about agriculture."
Q: Who sets it up?
A: "The FFA does"
Q: Like you said it’s for the younger kids to learn more about agriculture?
A: "Yes and it helps them have more respect for agriculture."
Riliegh Smith Interviews Jessica Noel
Q:How much work is it to set up a Fall Harvest?
A:“It takes about 3 to 4 hours to step up and about just as much to tear down.”
Q: What does Fall Harvest teach kids?
A: “Leadership skills, responsibility, and respect.“
Q: What did you do for fall harvest? A:“I did the lawn mower safety. Me and Gabe Bulmer both did.” Q: What all does that include? A: “Just how you gotta be safe around lawn mowers. You have to be careful when the blades are on, you have to be careful with your ear protection, and you have to be careful with your eye protection. You have to be really careful with touching the engine when it’s on, because it gets really hot. It’s a lot of stuff, I can honestly go on for days.”
Q: What did you have to do to prepare for today?
A: “We had to get 350 bales of straw, so lots of work, we had to put them up, and we had to get a lawn mower here. That was the stressful part.”
Q: What were the different stations?
A: “The stations were a straw maze, lawn mower safety, games, petting zoo, and a class room talking about popcorn.”
Q: What do the kids get out of this?
A: “Just the experience of being on a farm. Kids are able to not only have fun on this day, but they are also educated about the importance of farming."
Q: Why is this important to the school/you?
A: "Well, it teaches kids about what the farm community is like and how things are ran, and teaches them different stuff like that."

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that mails high-quality books to children from birth until their 5th birthday regardless of their family’s income. “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” states the National Commission on Reading.
Financial Donations made through the Blue River Community Foundation have allowed this wonderful program to be offered in our community! Each month, registered children who live in Southwestern’s school district will receive an age appropriate book in the mail, addressed to them, at no cost to the family. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. to make many wonderful books in the program available in braille and audio format for children who are blind or visually impaired in order for all children to benefit from these wonderful books.
Interested in registering your child?
To register your child, please complete the form below and send it to Southwestern Elementary School in an envelope addressed: Imagination Library Registration Form, C/O Joanna Yeend. If you have any questions regarding Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, please contact Joanna Yeend at Joanna.yeend@gmail.com.
