BLOOMINGDALE NEWS
OCTOBER 2019
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Greetings Bloomingdale Families!
We are back into the swing of things at Bloomingdale Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year! We are excited for your student(s) to experience the new math program, Bridges, as well as to continue our character education program, The Positivity Project. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have been actively participating in a Nature/Sensory based learning pilot program, and our Kindergartener’s learned all about potatoes on their field trip to Tucker’s Taters. Our Parent's Club is up and running, and coffee order forms have been sent home. We are excited for more family nights and activities for this year ahead. Thank you to all of our families who were able to attend the Meet the Teacher event. We have had an extremely busy and productive start to our school year and we are already climbing to new heights together in just a very short time. I look forward to another wonderful year ahead!

A NOTE FROM THE NURSE
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! Here are a few reminders and requests as we start our year together:
o Please remember that any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) needs to be housed here in the nurse’s office, students may not transport or carry any type of medication on their person with the exception of those who have been authorized by their doctor, parent and myself. This means medications must be dropped off at school by an adult. They must also be in their original, labelled container.
o All medications (prescription or over-the-counter) can only be given to students when I have an order that is signed by the student’s doctor and a parent or guardian. I have these forms available in my office and they are also located on my website. These need to be updated yearly.
o All students in K, 1st, 3rd and 5th grades and those who are new to the district need to have a physical exam on file that was performed within a year of the first day of school (after September 5th, 2018). I will be scheduling school physicals in the near future and have sent out notices to all students who have not met this requirement. Please call me if you have any questions about this.
o All students should bring in an extra pair of clothes to school to have available to them. Things like spills, mud, rips, accidents etc. happen often! It is really handy for the student to have their own weather-appropriate clothes to change into if need be.
o Its flu vaccine season! The New York State Department of Health and CDC recommend that all children 6 months of age and older receive the flu vaccine. By getting your flu vaccine every year you help protect yourself and everyone around you!
As always, please contact me at any time with any questions or concerns, I’m always happy to help!
Thank you,
Nurse Meghan

In STEAM we are learning about Sound and Light, most recently learning about waves. Students had a mini lesson on waves, did an experiment to practice what they learned, and then were quizzed on their findings through Kahoot! We had so much fun competing against each other for points to get onto the Leaderboard & can't wait to take more Kahoot quizzes in the future (who knew a test could be so fun!)!
Bloomingdale Parents Club
The forms have been sent home with your student or can be picked up in the office. Payment is due at the time of taking the order. Please have checks made out to "Bloomingdale Parents Club". Orders are due by Friday October 24th, and will be delivered the week of November 18th. Look for information about pick-up in the November Newsletter. Thanks for participating and helping to make this a successful fundraiser!
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The new Bloomingdale School Garden is taking shape! Thanks to Ollie Burgess and Specialty Wood Products for all the new cedar lumber donated, the garden beds are almost all put together and ready to be put in place and filled. We'll have everything ready come spring! Meanwhile the potatoes are ready to harvest in the older garden, and the other vegetables are coming along too.
In the cafeteria some students rose to the challenge of trying Corn and Black Bean Salad to celebrate the Harvest of the Month: Sweet Corn!
Mrs. Lawless' class started their Farm to School Through the Year project by creating lesson books to keep track, in their own style, what they have learned each time Mrs. Foppert visits the classroom or they come into the garden. It was a fun and messy time making our veggie printed covers.
Lastly, October is Farm to School Month! Keep an eye out for updates to the Saranac Lake Farm to School Facebook page as well as handouts in folders and bulletin boards around the school. We'll be talking a lot about why Farm to School matters and highlighting various farms and foods.
PBIS CELEBRATION, 9/26/2019
Kindergarten.....Brayden Schwartz is an awesome Kindergartener and helper. He is ready to learn and also lend a hand.
Grade 1.............Annabelle Snyder is always there to help both her classmates and Ms. Schmidt. She is always showing by example and is a great leader in the classroom.
Grade 2.............Patricia Dominesey is a kind, happy person who comes to school eager to learn. She is such a good friend and role model to others. She makes our classroom a brighter place!
Grade 3.............Leighton Tomaszewski is an outstanding student. She is kind, hard working and helpful to everyone she meets. She can always be relied on to do her best in every situation. We are fortunate to have Leighton in our class!
Grade 4.............Emily Bartiss is a hard working, kind and respectful student in every situation she is placed in. She does the right thing no matter who is watching and sets the example for her peers to do so as well. She comes in each morning with a smile, hug, and positive attitude, ready to take on whatever tasks we have that day. I am so happy that Emily is in our classroom!
Grade 5........... Brook Burke is always present in every way in our classroom. We can all tell she is attentive because she is always looking in all the right places (at the person speaking, the Smartboard, our charts, her work). She listens actively and attentively when her teacher or classmates are sharing ideas or information. Additionally, she is curious, investigating problems with the vigor of a good mathematician or scientist. As she takes in these ideas and information, she uses it to grow new ideas, which she readily shares with our class. Furthermore, Brook is also a good partner and a hardworking teammate. She is constantly helping us all grow and learn new things! It is for these reasons and many more, that Brook has been chosen 5th Grade Student of the Month!
Lunchroom.........Ashlyn Tomaszewski
Sportsmanship...Isabella Fuller is always ready to listen, follow directions, do her best, and be there to help a friend. She is safe, kind, hardworking and a true pleasure to have in class! Keep up the great work, Bella, you are and awesome role model in PE.
