Astronomy Research Seminar
Boyce-Astro will be conducting the DoubleSTARS Astronomy Research Seminars online and in classrooms at several locations for the Spring Semester 2019. Students will propose and conduct original research in astrometry as a team member and complete a research paper accepted for publication. They will experience the scientific process from proposal all the way through to publication. Boyce-Astro astronomy students have published over 30 papers in the past two years.
For Mt. Everest Academy students, as well as being a good learning experience, the completion of the Astronomy project can take the place of the normal Semester 1 Science Fair Project requirement here. The time commitment for each is about the same.
One of our seniors, Skylar L., took the program a couple of years ago and this is her feedback, which is also on the Boyce-Astro website:
As a high school student with a passion for science and Astronomy, I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to research under the expert guidance and support of Boyce-Astro. Learning that my research will soon be published has been the highlight of my education so far and will add valuable substance to my college applications.
Skylar L., Sophomore, Mount Everest Academy
Want to learn more about this program? Skylar will have a table set up at this Thursday’s Science Fair and would be happy to share her experiences and information with you.
Shells for Science
During month 6, Mrs. Apazidis' APES class will be researching how ocean acidification affects shelled marine organisms, and they are in need of shell samples from marine organisms of San Diego. If it's convenient for you to gather some shells from the beaches of San Diego for this experiment, please email Mrs. Apazidis at aapazidis@sandi.net and let her know
The shells do not have to be whole (although preferred). The project will simulate an acidic environment, which as you may already know, will sacrifice the integrity of the shell. Don’t donate “pretty” samples, they will be destroyed! Of course it's preferable to keep shells at the beach…but...Science!
Thanks for your help!
"Grab-N-Go" Lunches
Mt. Everest Academy has lunches available in the office three days a week, Tuesday through Thursday. Lunches cost $2.75 or are free to students who qualify on the free/reduced lunch application. Apply online for free/reduced lunches.
